Its early...but if my visual acumem doesn't desert me, she ASKED how appropriate this fence would be for a small Yorkshire Terrier. I replied from PERSONAL experience. And believe me, I was using Restraint on the visuals I could have provided this forum.

And although I'm sure the word "abusive" is not a pleasant thing to see....rest assured...what the animals FEEL is far worse...

"Careful"? I've been to that place....to my shame.....never again...

I don't think electric fences are a good idea, especially with such a small dog. But, I think Alison's point is especially valid - that an electric fence does absolutely nothing to protect your small dog from predators.

I must admit that when I saw the question, I thought "oh, here we go again". HOWEVER, I personally think that when someone asks for our opinions, it is okay for us to express them. If someone considers electric fences to be abusive, now is an okay time to say so, IMHO.

We have 2 dogs. A Corgi and a Yorkie. We have a hidden fence by a company called Petsafe Hidden fence. We had it installed in September. Our Yorkie weighs 7.9 lbs as of Friday and he wears his collar quite easily and comfortably. He enjoys the outdoors alot and had no trouble at all adapting to our system. He has zero aggressive behavior and has an amazing personality. He is not at all bothered by our system. The Petsafe system gives an auditory warning in a wide zone in front of the buried wire. He doesn't usually get beyond this and when he gets the warning beep from his collar he just heads back into the yard. We personally have been very happy with our petsafe hidden fence for our Yorkie. I especially like it in the front yard so he won't go near the street.

I'm still surprised it actually shocks the dog. I thought it did that you know when you put your tongue on a battery thing..a little jolt..i didn't think it actually shocked..so I agree thats mean. Poor dog thinkin it's on the trail of a cute lil ol kitty and bam it's slammed in the electric chair..not nice..not nice at all..

Hey all,

I haven't been on here in quite a while, I'm having an invisible fence installed tomorrow by the company called "Watch Dog". I did explain my worries that she is a 7 pound Yorkie and have heard that these fences can hurt a small dog. They told me that they have different levels of shock or whatever they called it and they start with the lowest one, they will let me feel it before they put it on Trixie, so I know how it feels. But now reading all the replies, I'm scared outta my mind about it!!!! Has anyone's dog been actually hurt because of one of these?

Here is a thread that got a little heated but not too bad. It discusses the pros and cons of an electric wire and also the buried type.

Everyone here knows that I use and electric wire and it works just fine in our home. It hasn't worked in probably a few months and isn't even plugged in anymore but knowing it is there has kept Rebel in the backyard where he belongs.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Glad to hear yours worked fine. I've heard horror stories about them from people who don't have them, but haven't come across one that has actually hurt their puppy. I've only heard good things from people who actually have them.

My sister has the Petsafe invisible fence. She raves about it. She said that it only took her minpin a day to be trained by it. It beeps 3 times before first, warning the dog that it has passed the boundries. So they have that time to get back behind the fence. The dog learns quickly not to pass it again. IMO feel that it is okay for a dog over 7lbs. I would rather have a dog recieve a small zap than be hit by a car if there are no other choices. I feel like it is more responsible than letting a dog repeatedly escape from a yard.

There are different ones that you can buy. I went back to TSC to ask about them and was told that the smallest box is safer for the smaller dogs than the large boxes. Also, the type of wire that you use plays a factor. But, with many boxes, you can adjust the amount of current that runs through the wire.

People have a tendency to discredit things that they aren't educated about. I do not feel that it is abusive. Abuse to me is when someone beats their dogs, neglects their dogs or allows them to run freely where they can get hurt or hit by a car.

It isn't fair to label everyone that uses them as abusive dog owners. It simply isn't true. Those that know me know that my dogs are very loved and spoiled. They get pampered, go for rides and all three sleep with me...gets a little crowded at times, but they're my babies.

We are planning on building a house and the addition we are going to move in to doesnt allow fences so we are going to do the invisible fence. I have read up on them and they are safe to use. The dogs dont even need the collars on wonse they have learned the perimeters. The house In am in now is fenced both front and back yard ortherwise Chachi would have run off by now. We are going to put the invisible fencing in the front and back yard of the new house.

Good luck Tot! Please let us all know how it goes. I have been waiting for one that works with smaller dogs. We rent and the landlord refuses to fix the fence. We fix what we can, but once in a while Brandy finds a way out because it is so old. If she sees a dog she doesn't listen to the "come" command as well as I would like her to. I really feel like we have no other choices and it would be irresponsible to let her continue to find ways out. So I am very interested in how things go.
Welcome to YT! And FYI just skip over any posts that might seem offensive to you. We are really a nice community! Personally, I would never put anyone who owns an invisible fence in the same category as someone who beats their dog (an abuser.)
