Invisible Fences? Hi, I don't have a fenced in yard. Instead we have an invisible fence that we got for our lab. I was wondering if the invisible fence would work with a yorkie. Do any of you use one? We are still researching things we need before we actually bring a pup home Any input would be greatly appreciated! |
I have heard that they have not made an invisible fence yet for a dog under 7 lbs. The collar weighs too much for them to be comfortable. At least I haven't run across one. |
Thats what I am worried about I will do some research and read up on the fences and small dogs |
Do you still have the manual to the one that you bought? It should state clearly the size limitations. The one I seen said 7+ pounds. I would definately listen to this warning because it could make a tiny yorkie miserable. I have heard of people on here using a wired electric fence. |
well my lab doesnt wear the collar anymore we havent used it in years im gonna have to go see what brand it is I looked at Invisible Fence Brand and they make a collar small enough for a yorkie They Say |
There are several people in my town that use them with yorkies. |
Our big Lab has one, but I wouldn't use it for the Yorkies. They are too small IMO. |
If it is old I would definately call the company. I wouldn't compare it to the new ones out that have been upgraded. |
I read somewhere that invisible fences shouldn't be used with little terriers because they are stubborn and brave, so they'll endure the electric shock to go off on a run if they really want to. Julie |

I used to work for Invisible Fencing....these collars are NOT effective (or humane actually) for small breeds, as it tends to change their personalities and create very timid or sometimes aggressive dogs. From my experience, the terriers did not do well with shock collars. And like any device, they are not always reliable, the "shock" will sometimes go off without being properly triggered. These collars are often ineffective even in the larger breeds (especially high pain threshold breeds such as Malamutes..etc), who will "endure" the shock repeatedly and run through the fence. I personally find it abusive to any animal...but that is JMO. Francie |
THe other problem with an electric fence is that it will not keep larger dogs or other animals OUT of your yard. That could be a problem if there is the possibility of a dog wandering loose or coyotes. |
Tells you what I know..I didn't think it ACTUALLY shocked them..I personally am not fond of any type of pens or fencing or chaining or any of that. but I think if others have them it is their choice. I'm not against them just don't care for them. But I have to say that is why I will always live in the country with lots of property lol.. |
OH wait I didn't mean fenced in yards on that..lol..those are great for kids and pets.. |
:interesti :idontknow I have never heard of a Invisible Fence. Where have I've been???? Oh no, I hope I'm not lost again!!! :yelrotflm |
