| the long haired yorkie and the collar....???? how do all of you keep a collar (or even clothing) on your long haired fur beauties without their hair getting all tangled up? My Bentley has a silk coat that is fairly long and doesn't tangle or mat easily except around the neck when I leave a collar on him or clothing for too long and by "too long" I mean a day! Does anyone have any suggestions? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I don't keep a collar on Cali. And after I had her in a onesoe for a week after her surgery and she was matted unbelievable, I don't but clothes on her either. I just have a bow addiction now.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | There have been awful accidents with yorkies wearing collars & strangling or getting it caught and actually hanging themselves... PLEASE be very careful and never leave your yorkie alone wearing one....I also prefer Harnesses to a collar...my girls never wear anything around their necks.... |

| I have kids who are not alway so good about doors so I keep a collar on mine most of the time. You have to brush them everyday(sometimes more than once a day) no matter what you put on them so if you stay on top of that and use detangler/conditioner maybe that will help.

| Both of mine are long silky coated, but I found that the soft nylon collers are not an issue,I keep mine with thier collers because I am so afraid they might sneek out the door and that way everyone know where they belong,no,they have never had a run-away yet,but they are my kids and I have to add that extra protection. I also have heard of horriable accidents but for me its choosing what would be the choice of 2 bad situations, lost ofr accident |

| I only use a harness on my babies and don't leave it on. I brush them everyday it's the only way I can keep them knot free. Mellie always wears a bow though.

| I dont put any collars or necklaces on chloe, Im too worried something could happen. I do leave clothes on her and she does fine, but I also keep her hair about medium length and I brush her out really good before I put clothes on her and I dont have a problem with matting.

| I use a harness when I'm walking him on a leash and he doesn't wear a collar in the house, but when I take him out with me on errands and he's in his bag I wanted to be able to put a collar on him with his tag cause he looks so cute. It's just that it gets tangled so easily and I hate to have to brush out tangles just cause he looks cute in a collar. Thanks for all the advice though! |

| I dont put collars on my dogs because of yorkies and trachea problems. I have found if I brush the hair before I put clothes on it doesnt matt.

| My Yorkie wears a harness and a collar occasionally. For quick trips outside to pee - I have a collar with a leash already attached to it that we quickly put on for that trip. And, for walks and other longer times outside - he wears a harness. Anyway - if you choose to have your pup wear a collar at times - and it seems to be causing matting --- try one of those leather - narrow - rounded-type collars....not the wider more flat ones. These little rounded collars fit into the hair much better and will cause less tangling and matting. I learned this with my Bichon. Good luck! Carol Jean |
