My Yorkie wears a harness and a collar occasionally. For quick trips outside to pee - I have a collar with a leash already attached to it that we quickly put on for that trip. And, for walks and other longer times outside - he wears a harness.
Anyway - if you choose to have your pup wear a collar at times - and it seems to be causing matting --- try one of those leather - narrow - rounded-type collars....not the wider more flat ones. These little rounded collars fit into the hair much better and will cause less tangling and matting. I learned this with my Bichon.
