I'm a new yorkie mommy, I have never shown dogs (but I do watch animal planet) I have never bred before, but we all love are yorkies and I'm sure we all think there beautiful and are gorgeous enough to show, if we didnt, we would not post pictures after pictures of are babies, but my question is, why do they have to be AKC to show in a ring? On that note, it's idol time so see ya all later )

I know of a very reputable show person, she told me it is all politics really- not the best of breed always wins, and you are fooling yourself if you believe that... the show world is filled with politics and who's who.

I also don't believe that you need to show to breed, come on- if you are going by the AKC standards, why does a judge have to tell you if your dog is good enough... your vet has cleared your dog of all health issues, why does what a judge feel, the only way to go? one dog may win over another because the judge liked their looks better... even though both dogs were 100% on the mark for standards. Does that mean the one who didn't win isn't good enough?

I myself would not buy a dog by a person who breeds and shows if they put their dogs into other homes after their breeding life is over- I myself want a dog who comes from a family breeder, one with a small amt of dogs, and one who keeps them until they pass.... I want to know that the breeder, has dogs because she wants them, and doesn't get rid of them when they are no longer bringing in the dough.

Everyone has their preferences, that is why there are so many different breeders out there.... just because I like things one way, doesn't mean it has to be that way.

I see a lot of people who feel superior because they are "show" people.... I guess if you feel you are better than any one of us who has, or will breed a dog, following as close to AKC as you do... well then more power to you... but there are many who feel that your way isn't the way it has to be... and just because some breeders dont' show doesn't mean their dogs are of any less quality than yours.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... and can you believe this one?? I bred a yorkie, who I didn't show, and I got a pup who I have been told by the vet and a show person that my pup is show quality.... but it isn't for me... I am not going to subject my family pet to the life of a show dog... she loves the grass, she loves to run through the snow, she loves to be "free"... not kenneled to protect her coat.

People just need to take pride in what they do... and not worry about what so and so may think... who cares? If you are doing what is right by the dogs then there is nothing to worry about.
Next time I need something said will you please just say it for me lol..you have said exactly to every last word one hundred percent how I feel. Thank you by the way lol..
I totally agree with what you have said and feel exactly the same way myself.

That is so sad. I have had so many pets though-out my lifetime. I have always taken any dog/cat/bunny/turtle that someone could not keep. I have done research for friends looking for a dog to help them understand why they did not want a dalmation or jack russel terrier. I have placed a number of animals picked up off the street, I take them to the vet-have them neutered, feed and brushed back to the beautiful animal they were supposed to be and found them homes. I make a calculated decision on every animal I take as my personal pet and have tried to raise my children to understand that animals are not disposable. My children, ages 15 & 18 do not have pets of their own as they are not responsible. The 15 yo wants his own dog, I have given him Quattro to practice on, walking, feeding, water (he bathes and brushes them all for me for $30) I told him in one month we would go over his progress and talk about it then. They play with my dogs, but they are mine. My responsibility 100%. I fear for the time they will all be old at the same time.

AND MORE MEGA DITTOS There are some show people on another thread that honesty believe there are no politics in the ring. ANY competition involving an individual human judgement is subject to politics. I'm not saying that all judges play that game, but the potential is there. By showing is the only way to prove you have a quality yorkie, even if you don't place is also one of their arguments. And, it would be silly not to show if you have a show quality dog. We're talking about dogs, not little Jon Bona's (not sure if I spelled her name right). But the show circuit mentality and judging is very much one in the same. I too believe in freedom, not kenneled. So I deal with the accidents on my carpet and hope someday..... SOON...... I'll be able to replace it with tile. And I don't do top knots, rather I keep their hair trimmed so they don't try to kill each other trying to get them out because that's the first thing they go after. Sorry, that's another subject!
Thank you again for your great post.

Default forgot to add.............

And there's no way in hell I would "place" any of my yorkies in another home when their breeding days were over. Heck, it's hard enough to have you child grow up and move out on their own or "give" your child to another in marriage!

Default geeeez

I couldn't bear to part with any of my litter, so now I have six and will not breed again (as far as I can see). But I am glad there are good hearted people who can do better than me. I could also see getting all caught up in the whole 'show' thing. I can be a little obsessive when I get started. I'm sure it would be a lot of fun, I have a competitive streak as well. I just don't have time at the moment. My hubby and I adore our babies, he called me the other day to say they made him 'happy!' That made me happy, too.

Yes...but this is something they are doing away with, probably at the end of the year as I was told. You can get complete details on their site...www.ckcusa.com. Here is what I know off the top of my head:
* If your dog comes from 2 parents registered with another kennel club that they recognize (there is a list of these) you can download a form and you have to send a copy of the other registration papers with it.
* If only one or no parents are registered, the dog has to be at least 6 months old, you have to send pics from different angles and 3 (I think) witnesses + 1 vet opinion that the dog is pure bred. Also, I know in most cases I've heard of, they come back and ask for a DNA tests too.

I talked w/ them day before yesterday and they said this form of "open registration" will end soon, either summer 06 or beginning of 07 depending on numbers. Once all their new "rules" have been put into place, you can request an updated "code of ethics."

I had a very hard time parting with the puppies from my litter (which is one reason why I won't breed again).. but the families that they went to are wonderful- and I even get to "dog sit" them, so I keep in close contact.

Our city codes won't allow us to have any more dogs, we are at the max for pets in our home.. (I did keep one from the litter) we are moving to the country, so we will be able to have more pets, but we won't be getting anymore, I don't think so anyways.
