Not so. Yes, the standard states they should be no more than 7 lbs, but there are LOTS of shady breeders out there that could care less about the standard and do not breed to try to meet it. As a result, you do see Yorkies in a wide variety of sizes...even over 10 lbs. It does not mean that they are 'probably Silkies.'

It doesn't matter how big your Yorkie is as long as you love him/her. The "standard" doesn't mean a thing. That's what I hate about Crufts here in the UK. They set a 'standard' for the perfect animal and I think that is totally wrong because breeders then use breeding 'techniques' to get the sort of dog that Crufts say is the standard and there was a big scandal here about it last year because it was evident that some dogs were deformed through suspicious breeding 'techniques'. Goodness knows what happens to their dogs that don't fit the 'standard'. Because of it, the TV companies refused to show Crufts on TV last year and I hope they do the same this year. My Teddy's mother was quite big. We didn't know how big Teddy was going to be and we didn't care but he is nearly 14 and only weighs 6llbs but he has always been very healthy. He used to be 5lbs so has put on a bit of weight. I don't think he realises he is small because he will socialise with big dogs when out for a walk and if they growl at him he will growl back.

No, they do not. Their standard weight is "up to 7 pounds" but their weight does vary - due to poor breeding, flukes of nature, and Miracle Grow.!

Yorkies are a "Toy" breed. They are not in any other group.

In my book, if there are varying sizes of Yorkies then yes, Yorkies come in all sizes. What matters is the dog him/herself and what you can do to give him /her a good life.

While there is a standard, if ALL Yorkies met the standard, Westminster and all the other dog shows would be a very crowded place! Even with the most careful breeding, a small percentage (maybe 25%), will be good enough to be shown and even those great show dogs will still have faults according to the breed standard.

So many dogs, even those carefully bred, will not be good enough to be shown and those dogs are our pets. They will not meet the breed standards closely enough. Some will even have a fault regarding the size standard, just like those who have color faults, uneven toplines, floppy ears, etc. This does not mean they are not full bred Yorkies!

I have 3 yorkies, Tessie 11 lbs, Hobbes 15 lbs and Calvin 7 lbs. Hobbes and Calvin have the same purebred yorkie mom and dad, different litters. The parents weigh 7-8 lbs. Hobbes is the sweetest most loving of the 3.

Pete is about 4.5 months old and weighs probably 7lbs now. The vet said he's gonna be a big one, people comment on how big he is. He is skinny, just heavy I guess.

That's like saying a cocker isn't a cocker because it measures over 15 inches.

You might not be able to show a yorkie that exceeds 7 pounds, but that doesn't make it any less a yorkie. The "toy" designation has a wide variation in heights and weights.

And for who ever posted the link about the "fool proof" way to tell a yorkie from a silky...did you actually READ the link? I would take someone who says you can always tell a silky from a yorkie because silky's don't wear bows with a grain of salt. Just sayin...
