| I usually dock tails and remove dewclaws at 3-5 days. If you have never done this before I would suggest someone showing you how. A vet or breeder.

| Please have a vet do it (at least for the first time). I have the post about docking an 8 week old puppy - the breeder didn't do and I have decided to leave it alone. I would recommend you do it, but do it tomorrow. I understand 3 - 5 days is the time frame, depending on your vet. I also hear the cost is only like $5 a tail. My male Yorkie had his tail docked by the breeder (also a first time for him) and his tail is too long. I guess he didn't take into consideration the growth. Doesn't look that bad, but I know it is not correct. Good luck. |

| Are you just keeping or selling your yorkies as pets? Consider nOT docking their tails. My pup has her entire tail and it is so cute. She loves to wag it furiously. She wouldn't be the same without it. I think dogs should have tails. |

| Please see a vet if this is your first time. There are a few things to know about tail docking before taking it on yourself. It is simple but things can go wrong...

| I always get my vet to do tails & dewclaws. He charges me $7.00 per pup. I'm to scared to do it myself. Would hate to have something go wrong. Besides, the vet always checks over each pup as well. |

| I would definetly let the vet do it at 3-5 days old. During this visit the vet also removes the dew claws and gives them a puppy check up. They are just so fragile. I would not suggest doing this yourself for numerous reasons. Also, I take the Mamma (and puppies) in to be checked within 24 hours of birthing. Last edited by Julz; 02-28-2006 at 05:37 AM. |

| First off....LOVE the name Crimson. Obviously, you are my kind of gal! Secondly, 3-5 days is the best time to have it done, IMO. If you have never done this yourself, PLEASE have a vet or exeperienced breeder teach you how the first time around. It will be less stress on you and less likely that there is a "goof." It really is not expensive at all to have done, plus this will give a vet/experienced breeder a chance to have an early look at the pups and possibly spot a problem early on that a less trained eye may not catch. (I'm not preaching, I am new too and live by this philosophy at the present time.) Let me know if you need help finding a vet to do this for you. For the initial check, tails and dew claws, my vet charged $45. A small price to pay for what you get/avoid in return. I would be more than willing to help you find a vet or I know you could ask Sue (Snow Yorkies) and she would help too if you need it. Good Luck. |

| One problem you may have is not docking it to the proper length...too short or too long. Or, you may not have it clamped enough to completely stop blood flow...which would be really bad. I've never done it myself and unfortunately, did not get to watch when our vet performed it on ours, although I'd watched her do other litters. I am sure I could do it myself without a problem, but I would just rather our vet be able to see them while they are young, so it just makes sense to have her do them, at least until a point in time when I am completely comfortable with it. After only seeing it done once, that was not something I was comfortable trying on my own. |
