I would definetly let the vet do it at 3-5 days old. During this visit the vet also removes the dew claws and gives them a puppy check up. They are just so fragile. I would not suggest doing this yourself for numerous reasons. Also, I take the Mamma (and puppies) in to be checked within 24 hours of birthing.
