Nail clipping....any suggestions? Well I dedcided this week end to start trying to groom Zoe' myself. I have started worrying about her being mistreated at the groomers because of some stories that I heard around. I did really well with the ears, potty area and her paw pads (the clipper part). I don't cut her anywhere else, I just let her coat grow long. Then we got to the nail clipping....oh my. She didn't fuss much with the front feet, but when I tried the back ones you would have thought I was trying to cut her leg off. She pulled her feet and cried when I just put the cutter on the nail. I finally got one foot done and gave up on the other. I couldn't stand the thought that I might be hurting her and she was do stressed. I was told that a lot of dogs hate the back feet trimmed. Is this true or has she been cut in the quick before. It has made me have second thoughts on trying to do this. Any help or suggestions? Telea Zoe' and Mia

We are waiting for our Yorkie, and so I can't tell you definitely that my method will work for your dog, but here is what I do for my cairn terrier. I sit her on my lap as if she were a little baby, facing out. Then I use a coarse nail file (purchased from a local beauty supply store) and give her a doggy manicure. I start with her front paws followed by her back paws. It doesn't take long at all if you keep up with it on a bi-weekly basis. Usually the TV is on and time passes quickly. This method also keeps me from accidentally cutting the quick because I can see the softer dark part of her nail as I file. I stop after each paw and tell her what a good girl she is and let her move about on my lap. After we're done, I give her a treat. This method has worked for me--I hope it can work for you. By the way, the drimmel electric tool did not work for us--our dog hates the sound.

I'm too scared so I take my girls to the vet to have them trimmed. It's worth the extra $$ to me. This way I'm not the "Bad Guy".

flashlight sometimes it helps to have someone helping you. and a trick i learned froma groomer friend of mine that i've used on my sister's yorkies ... a flashlight. holding it up to one sideand it'll show the quick and you can cut the nail and not worry about cutting the quick. that's where having a helper ... helps. and just try to play with her back feet and tell her she's a good girl and give her a treat when she lets you touch her feet. you can also try smearing some peanut butter on something she'll be able to lick to keep her distracted. hope some of this helped.

| I read on a puppy site to give them 1/2 cc per body weight of Vodka and this would calm her enuf to trim her nails! I was desperate for something to help with this part of our grooming so I did it, PLEASE DON'T YELL AT ME! Anyway it did nothing, but I enjoyed my little drink I had at the same time LOL! So I was nice and relaxed but Pita was still having no part of the nail trimming. I'm so afraid of breaking her legs or feet bones if i force her to stay still. I've tried everything to do it myself. I think I will have my groomer friend stop by and do it. It costs me 10 bucks but it's worth it. Pita behaves for her. I spose it's better than makin an alcoholic out of her.
