Confused Nail clipping....any suggestions?

Well I dedcided this week end to start trying to groom Zoe' myself. I have started worrying about her being mistreated at the groomers because of some stories that I heard around. I did really well with the ears, potty area and her paw pads (the clipper part). I don't cut her anywhere else, I just let her coat grow long. Then we got to the nail clipping....oh my. She didn't fuss much with the front feet, but when I tried the back ones you would have thought I was trying to cut her leg off. She pulled her feet and cried when I just put the cutter on the nail. I finally got one foot done and gave up on the other. I couldn't stand the thought that I might be hurting her and she was do stressed. I was told that a lot of dogs hate the back feet trimmed. Is this true or has she been cut in the quick before. It has made me have second thoughts on trying to do this. Any help or suggestions?
