| Night terrors? The rescue pup we have seems to have niggt terrors or something. She will be sleeping then start kind of yelping and get jerky movements and then will bite. Like yesterday while I was holding her, it happened and I was able to move my arm out of the way but then she bit down on the blanket. Kind of just clamping down. It happened toniggt a little worse and we weren't sure if she was having a seizure so my husband was trying to keep her from hurting herself and she bit him. It doesn't seem intentional. I don't think she is totally there all the time anyway but since starting the medication, she seems a little less dazed and less head pressing or tumbling over. Can abused dogs have something like night terrors? or maybe shes having bad dreams? Especially a sick pup with possible meningoencephalitis? Poor little girl. It's like she doesnt realize it happened and then will go back to sleep. I can only imagine all she's been thru in her young life. Breaks my heart because when she's awake she's soooo sweet.

| I think I answered my question... its yes and I k Indah knew it. This little girl has had such a rough life and so to top off the being so sick she can't help what happens when she's resting either.

| She could be having night terrors or bad dreams. Dogs do dream, and not all dreams are good ones. The biting as she wakes might or might not be related. Dogs, if you startle them out of a sound sleep, sometimes “lash out” simply because of animal instinct. My rescue yorkie is both vision and hearing impaired, and he usually sleeps peacefully but very soundly. If I startle him awake by touching him, he will sometimes lash out … so I’ve learned not do that. It’s not his fault and there’s certainly no way to train him out of it. I hope your little rescue girl is feeling better. |

| So does Cody, sometimes he'll whimper, when he does I'll lightly pet him so he knows he's safe.

| Well we figured out that yes shes having a lot of dreams. But this is prime seizure time (when sleeping) for her as well. She is having at least 1 grand Mal seizure daily as described by the vet. Maybe keppra will help.

| That's scary, you don't know if she's seizuring or dreaming. How long has she been on the keppra. Some meds kick in within 24 hours, I'm sure Bluebells would know. I never had a dog that had seizures. Poor sweet baby.

| She started keppra Wednesday along with prednisone and an antibiotic. She seems a little more aware of her surroundings since starting meds but doesn't seem to be real aware and sleeps all the time. Vision is affected too.

| How long it takes for meds to kick in isn’t an easy question. Anti seizure meds reach the bloodstream pretty quickly, but individual response varies. And anti seizure meds might not eliminate seizures entirely, they often only reduce the frequency and severity. The vet in this case probably doesn’t know the pup’s complete med history before being dumped at the shelter, so it will be difficult to evaluate until there’s a pattern established. |

| I have a foster pup who has COMS. She takes Keppra for seizures. It works quickly but also does not stay in the system long. I have to make sure she gets the med every 8 hours. If a dose is late by a couple of hours she will have twitching. What you described in your original post sounds like seizure activity to me. Sushi tended to be worse at night prior to us getting her on meds. She is also on gabapentin and omeprazole.
