| Slow Metabolism Just had Gidget to Vet for her annual checkup. She's gained a whole pound since visit last year. Vet said her metabolism is probably slowing down (she turned 5 in January). Any suggestions what I can feed her that will accommodate this slow down? Don't want her to gain any more weight. |

| I used to put some cooked green beans with Piccolo's food, to sort of trick her into thinking she was full. It worked for her.

| Thanks, I give Gidget frozen green beans for her snack. She likes the crunch when she eats them. Won't touch them once they defrost. |

| You will have to remove some kibble so she doesn't continue to gain weight, then give her the frozen green beans. Cody has the same issue. Mornings I give him his regular amount, evenings I give him 1/2 his regular amount, in a separate bowl (because he does not like wet kibble, he likes his crunchy) I give him 1/4 cup green beans. This has kept his weight down for the last 3 years. Frozen, thawed he doesn't care, he is not a fussy eater.

| Many years ago I consulted with a vet nutritionist for Armani and Pippi because they both had weight issues and I was feeding them such small amounts of kibble and they always wanted more food. I home cooked for them for about a year and then I decided to get them back on dog food. They started gaining weight again, so I decided to try canned food rather than kibble. It worked! They were able to eat a decent amount (where they felt satiated) and they didn't gain weight They are siblings and what I realized then is that it has to be a genetic thing...and definitely had to do with metabolism. My other pups didn't have that same issue with kibble. They remain on canned food now...they will be 15 in a week.

| There is a big difference in calories between wet and dry food. There is more water in canned and dogs can eat 2 -3 times the amount of it to get the same calories as with dry. I used Armani and Pippi as an example, but I have done this with others. There is no real advantage to feed kibble imho. It does nothing to prevent the need for dentals in spite of what some people believe.

| Armani and Pippi are now on RX diet for kidneys. For my healthy pups, I feed Royal Canin. I think each person needs to choose what works best for their pups. I hate advising about food online because people tend to think the dog food advisor is more knowledgeable than vet nutritionists. He is simply not someone I would listen to based on his resume. For pet food questions, I have always listened to the veterinary nutritionists ... there is one who does answer questions: Dr. Remillard www.petdiets.com If you click on "Ask the Nutrionist" you will find an extensive list of questions and answers that you can search through...very informative Perhaps the company who makes the food you have been using, has a canned food that would work?

It isn't necessarily the amount of calories in the food so much as they can eat more canned and have less calories per serving. Hope that makes sense. This is the one I use. https://www.chewy.com/royal-canin-ad...food/dp/127198

I hope she likes it and it works. I weigh the food on a kitchen scale. That way I know I am giving a consistent amount. Keep us posted please!
