| When can my Yorkie play after her spay? Hi everyone! I have two new Yorkie pups, Puma who is 11 months old and Nova, 3 months old. Puma recently got spayed last Sunday. Ever since, she’s been wearing her onesie and I actually only gave her the pain meds from the doc the day after surgery. She didn’t seem to like them much and hasn’t been in pain. Since yesterday she has been wanting to play with her baby sis Nova. I’ve tried keeping Puma in the crate, but she cries. I think mostly because she’s wondering why she has to be in the crate, while Nova gets to play. Her appetite has been fine. She seems healthy. And she’s been popping normally. I’ve been checking her incision and everything looks normal and healed. She also has the sutures on the inside that dissolve, so we don’t have to make a trip back to the vet. I’ve been trying to keep her and Nova from playing but it’s been hard. Especially because I feel bad. I yell “No” when the wrestle a bit and they both look at me sad and confused wondering what they’ve done wrong. Is it so bad if Puma plays? I was told to not let her play for two weeks, but I was also told to keep her e-collar on for two weeks as well, which truthfully, I did not listen to. I instead purchased her a onesie and I was glad I did. Her incision is covered, she has not attempted to bother it and she’s comfortable. When did you start letting your girls play after a spay? Thank you. |

| There's a big difference in not following the vets orders of using the E-collar and not following the re-coop time for playing. These pups bounce back fast after spay surgeries but that does not mean they are healed, what you see on the outside does not mean internally she is just as healed. I've been through this and yes, it's tough to keep them calm, and yes, heartbreaking to see them cry wanting to play, but, you must follow the vets instructions. As you have seen, mild playing turns into wrestling, then zooming, then the pouncing. Give Puma at least 10 days of no crazy hard play, that's only a few more days. BTW, I love her name

| My Jazzy just finished her 10 days after spay and we waited that whole time before big time play. Hope you do the same and it will be thrilling for all when that day comes shortly.

| It’s a pretty huge surgery. I know how difficult it can be to keep them calm but she needs to stay calm with no playing for 2 weeks. Her sister could end up hurting her so it’s best that she stay in a crate or playpen for those 2 weeks. You might want to look at Kong’s and other chews that will keep her busy without a lot of movement. All you can see is the outside not the inside that is also healing.

| Thank you all the advice. I have kept Puma in her crate mostly all day, except at night when it’s bedtime (they both sleep in bed with me). It has been hard, but I do not want her to get hurt. It’s sad that our girls have to go through so much, but it’s necessary. And you all are right; while her wound looks great, I was not considering that her “insides” need to heal as well. Once again, thanks for the advice, I appreciate all of you. |

| Duchess was playing when I went to pick her. She was alert, jumping and didn't seem in pain. However, I tried my best to restrict her movements. I keep her in her expen the first several days. She hated it. Have you ever tried keeping an hyper active puppy confined? Anyway I honestly let Duchess out after only a few days and she was fine. I did make sure she didn't do any jumping on couches etc.......I restricted her movements. I just didn't keep her crated. However I only did that based on her behavior. Energetic puppies aren't usually in pain. Had she been lethargic or groggy, she would have remained confined or a trip back to the vet. Last edited by yavenay; 07-06-2020 at 04:53 AM. |
