I definitely will. We found that Yorkie Pookie much preferred cats over other dogs. Heard they can get a 'Napoleon small dog complex, so maybe cats less threatening. As far as your cats accepting new pup ... well already get along w dog so I'm making assumptions will go fine.
On my end ... Peanut my current cat gets too overexcited and runs right up to introduce & play. I don't foresee a problem as he played well with my hand sized turtle (passed away from resistant pneumonia, heat went out and was 22deg in FL). Overvyears I've found diff species seem to take well to each other.

Welcome to Yorkie Talk from a fellow Floridian! When we brought ours home over the years, my husband and I went together. We brought a soft blanket, and a puppy bed. They cuddled with me during the ride home and got an opportunity to get used to my scent. I always travel with a puppy pad in the car where I can reach it...helpful if they show signs of car sickness.

Have a safe trip home, and lots of luck with your new sweet baby!

Default Heidi is home!

Hi,

Sorry for delay ... I wrote & tried to post pics. Bf accidently erased trying help me. I've had so much trouble navigating site, I gave up trying post pics of her. I saw posting about how post pics, not working.

She was scared whole way but ate a few kibbles, drank and had Nutri-stat just in case. She didn't get sick, Yeah! We've been bonding but how do u prevent her from becoming too attached? I cant even go bathroom solo. New to me bc more familar w cats & grown dogs.

My Devon Rex cat 'Peanut' immediately wanted to meet her and they seemed to get along from beginning but he still is tad jealous for more lap time & wants to eat her food. They play or try to figure out btw them. Cat still wondering what she is, very intrigued & makes funny face when she licks him on nose/mouth. She's teenie, only 2lbs vet said yesterday. She's suppose to be approx. 5lbs. I'm aware they can get hurt easily (she's fragile @ this size) & health issues they can get so Ibjust finished putting Healthypaws insur on her. Peace of mind!

Suggestions barking? She HATES pen & acts like being scolded if I put her in. It's like 3×3 and I have to put her somewhere sometimes. Feel bad but I don't ability to cook or bathe & watch her.

Happy to hear you made it home and lil Miss Heidi did good on the trip. Being scared is normal, remember, she was just taken away from her momma and human momma, she will soon settle in her new home. The yorkie motto is "you'll never pee alone" lol, that's a yorkie thing, get use to it lol. Puppies do not smell like a dog, they have a puppy smell, this may be a reason why your kitty seems confused.
She has to get use to the pen, as hard as it may be you will have to ignore her. As long as she has her bed, food, water, pads and toys in it she will be just fine, not happy but safe when you can't watch her and I am sure your kitty will soon be jumping in that pen with her lol.

Frustrated... how can I bond w her when she's suppose to have food down to graze 24/7 and needs stay in 3×3 pen? Also have crate 3×2 for when I must leave her solo & to keep Peanut out, as I prefer to watch & supervise them together. I can't predict when she will go bathroom.
In pen she feels 'punished' and bond being effected negatively. I play in home w her to bond, but she is reverting backwards now refusing use pee pads. Tired, worried about bonding issue and considering putting diaper on her bc I feel I have no other options. Personally, I don't want a diaper dependent dog ... I can understand possibly @ night.

So good that your girl is with you now Interesting to see how their relationship with the cat will evolve))

She also can not predict when she will want to go to the bathroom yet. She is so little and her bladder is tiny! They pee a lot at this age. Also she needs time to adjust to her new reality. Give her something tasty when you put her in the pen so she makes a positive association. Ignore the barking and praise when she stops for being quiet.

I'm sure there's no need for a diaper.. We trained our boy indoors, and had pee pads all over the area where he was allowed to walk + one in the pen where he slept at night. I wanted for him to see a pee pad in close proximity literally anytime he wanted to pee. After few weeks we started taking away one pee pad at a time and then moving the remaining one closer to his permanent toilet spot. I also praised him a lot for going on a pad.

He also still follows me to the bathroom every time but I taught him "stay", so he stops at the door and waits patiently now.

I hope your girl will adjust well and soon!

No no do not use diapers they cause big health issues. I never used pens with my puppies. I just watched them very carefully if they started to go potty I would say no and take them where I wanted them to potty. I did use crates at night. I would only use the pen when you can’t watch her. She is a baby who just left her mom so of course she isn’t going to straight away get potty pads it takes time and lots of patience.

Welcome to YT and Welcome Home Heidi!! I'll be joining you in new puppy parenthood in January. So far, my potty plan is as follows:

- Baby Ijak (pronounced Jack) will be in his pen while I'm at work. I'm lucky to have my parents move in with me in the past few months, so they know to take the puppy out to potty every 2 hours, whether he needs it or not. This will help us establish a routine and a foundation for future training.

- For occasions when no one will be home, Ijak will be placed in a bigger pen with potty pads, which he is use to using from the breeder's house. His day to day pen will be smaller (think crate) which will have bed, food, and a couple toys.

As for not being able to go to the bathroom alone... is that not normal? Kaji, my yorkie, would always go with me. Unless I was at work, Kaji and I were attached at the hip.

Where to start to answer everyone or update situation. Long story short as possible, she was using peepad since 3wks & is nearly 11wks now, reverting backwards from how she was using them Sun & Mon. Now waits till gets out of pen to go, so trying leave her in until she goes. I thought everyone said they had small bladders? How does she have holding power bc insists go outside on rug instead?

Other behaviors toward cat shocked me and was told she's wanting to be Alpha. Cat backed off as friend extremely confused (he was friends with my prior turtle and didn't make such perplexed faces). From other behaviors I described I was having with her, I evidently need to show her I'm Alpha and growl when gets out of line & visual, like pointing or arm movement.
Hoping things start to get back on track, beginning with Alpha issue. Really sucks bc breeder/vet & service dog trainer (starting basics soon)all knew I havent had a dog in many yrs bc last time, pup was going great then became a nightmare. Failed classes and I was told he felt prior cat was suddenly Alpha. I tried to re-establish - told deepen voice, walk hard but not growl... I didn't know that helped. Anyway I lost the battle and he went to live with stepsister family who begged me constantly for him and it worked out for great, no problems, no other pets & man in house.
Oh I'm shocked at young age of her the Alpha thing and don't understand why dogs want to 'walk on me' like I'm not Alpha??!!

Like with everything else, I hope my posts are helpful because as another pet owner, what I am doing might be different from what you are doing, and hopefully you will get some useful ideas from them.

I get what you're saying about what to do if she's suppose to be in a pen because you also want to bond. The pen is a training tool, and things will change! Eventually she will spend less, and less time in the pen.

How I used the pen with my old man Kaji (RIP) and how I plan to use it with Ijak, is like I mentioned before, he will stay in the pen while he cannot be watched. When I will let him out, I will open the door, pick him up and IMMEDIATELY take him to his designated potty area. That can be a piddle pad or, as in my case our backyard. If I pick him up, he can't have an accident while we get to the designated potty area. I'll give him a 15-20 minute potty break. Puppies can get distracted so easily, so it's important to give them a chance to sniff, and actually potty. Of course, I will be encouraging him the entire time. If in the allotted time he doesn't potty, back in the pen he goes for 20 minutes and then we'll try again. If he does potty in the right place, and I can commit 100% of my attention on him, then I will let him roam, or I will engage him in play/training. By watching him like a hawk, I can correct unwanted behavior. For example, if he were to lift his leg to mark, I would distract with a noise (clap, or a loud "nuh uh") then redirect to a more positive behavior. At least that's the plan! It worked with Kaji, but he was already an old man when he came home. Ijak will be 13 weeks. I hope it works with him too!

As for the rug, can you move it temporarily? If she's using just the one rug it may be best to move it until she's fully potty trained. (I'm assuming your home isn't full carpet) Also, try to really clean it. I've had luck with Nature's miracle to remove pee smells.

As for the piddle pads, I am stealing this from the puppy book provided by my breeder:
Quote:
“I thought he was pee-pee pad trained?”
He was. As much as a three month old puppy can be.
Puppies love their homes, and when they leave our house, they leave their litter mates, their
mother, and people who have cared for them. It is only natural that they have feelings, and
these feelings are expressed as stress. Your new puppy is experiencing new sights, new
sounds, new rules, new humans, and new toys. This does not erode their desire to please
you—yet it causes them stress.
As for your issue with the cat... sorry! I'm no help. I'm allergic to cats, and Kaji passed away a couple of months ago. My plan of having 2 pets at once didn't work out. I'm sure others can chime in that have a yorkie and a cat at the same time.

You are absolutely wrong about the aplpha thing and it has been very much debunked. Dogs do not see humans as dogs so they can not see you as alpha at all. I would absolutely not be using a trainer that pushed the alpha thought process because it’s wrong and they certainly have not done enough training themselves if they do not know that. Trying to be the alpha is going to lead you down a bad path. Let her and the cat work it out because they will. There is no way she was potty trained at that age it was more of a luck thing.

I'm sorry to read of loss of your pet Kaji, may she be frolicking with my boys RIP.
There has been tremendous improvement from desperate last post, unbelievable!! She didn't respond to my weak growl, used another Alpha technique for puppies and it worked! Using pee pads like before I had issue. When put her on she goes, unlike prior when suddenly refusing use peepad at all. She and cat back to 'normal', not getting in his face.
Regarding a comment about moving rug, most everywhere has 1inch thick padding & rug bc I'm disabled and safer for me. In time Heidi will learn to be my Med Detect Dog, if she's up for it! Her genetic relatives learned sniff out migraines, low blood sugar etc. Right now we are just focusing on bonding, potty. She's very smart, learned name in few hours and I use word 'Nuun' as No so cat doesn't think he did wrong (realized he thought he was in trouble). Small baby steps and I know it takes approx 6mo for them to get the potty right & be able to hold it etc.. I'm just so happy she is doing well. Loves her reward treats and is a very happy girl today, playing and showing her adorable funny personality!
