| Worried about spaying Our little yorkie just weighed in at 4 lbs. she is 6months old. Every time she has gotten her shots, she is listless and has no appetite for 24 hours. I wanted to have her spayed, but am worried about how she will handle the surgery. She is the first tiny dog we ever had and we absolutely adore her. Has anyone had a problem with spaying a dog who has bad reactions to shots? |

| Surgery (spay) on a 6 month old that is 4 lbs should not be a problem. Just be sure your vet is using up to date anesthetic protocols. I have had pups with various reactions to vaccines. Is your vet separating them? They should not be done together. Here is a link about vaccines: https://www.aaha.org/guidelines/cani...uidelines.aspx

| Calling our vet on Tuesday morning to schedule her for surgery. Still very worried, but feel it’s better for her to be spayed. I will also talk to the vet about splitting up her shots, but even after har rabies shot, she had such a tough time. |

| My Joey had reactions to his shots as a puppy but did very well when he was neutered. One thing you could try with the shots is only give one at a time and talk to your vet about giving Benadryl about 30 minutes before a shot. Anesthesia is really safe but I know it’s still scary. Some of the things I recommend are presurgery blood work, make sure they have a heated operating table or a heated pad for it, have them put an IV cath in so if anything does happen it’s already in and that dosen’t take extra time, I would do fluids and I would make sure there is someone’s who’s job is just to monitor her vitals. Spaying then before their first heat and spaying in general is sooooo much better for them then not. You also probably want the vet to remove any baby teeth she might have left. I know anesthesia is scary to think about even I knowing it’s safe worry. I’m an emotional eater so I ussally drop them off and then go eat pancakes. I also have this thing where I have to go to the pet store and buy them something because that makes me feel like them will definitely be coming home and no issues.

Yorkie Talker | Worried about spaying Ours was a bit larger, 7lbs at 6 months but came through spaying on December 20 just fine. Biggest problem was keeping her quiet for 10-14 days per vets instructions. Afraid we didn't do too well at that but figured she wouldn't be trying to do anything if it hurt her. Yesterday was 10 day point, incision healing nicely and she's really been back to normal for about 6 days. |

| Make sure your vet does pre-surgery blood work before the surgery, you may have to ask for it. Some vets try to save clients money by skipping the blood work so make sure you ask to have it done. As for vaccines, I no longer allow my boy to get 2 vaccines at once. He'll get one, 2 weeks later he gets the 2nd. I don't mind the extra vet visit cot. Your baby will be just fine with her spay, the hardest part will be keeping her calm after the surgery, no running, jumping on and off furniture, no zooming through the house.

| Thank you everyone. She is scheduled for her surgery 1/12. I had a long talk with our vet too and feel all will be fine. I won’t relax until I know she is fine though! |

| Spaying and neutering have become a vital part of pet ownership to help eliminate the pet over-population crisis in addition to what health benefits may be derived from the removal of male/female hormone producing glands. However, neutering most definitely affects personality. If the spay is an ovariohysterectomy, not only is the uterus removed but also the ovaries which are responsible for producing the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Likewise testes secrete testosterone, which is necessary for proper physical development in males. When we spay and neuter, we not destroy the ability to reproduce, we also destroy the essence of maleness and femaleness. Once the male/female hormones are removed, the dog/bitch no longer exhibits the traits that are gender specific. |

| When we don't spay we leave our dogs susceptible to pyometra and mammary tumors/cancer! THAT alone is enough for me.
