| I have a yorkie.....well, actually he's..... This is the first yorkie we have had, now 2.5 years old. We were very careful to pick a good breeder, see the family line, etc. We love our pup and we are not breed snobs BUT.... Lately everywhere we go we are approached by people who love their great little dogs and start a conversation, "I have a yorkie...........well, actually it's a yorkie and some Papillion.................or it's a yorkie and Chihuahua.........or it's a yorkie and we're not sure what............ I am certainly not one to diss other people's loves but I wish the conversation went more like this......."I have a mixed breed dog that's yorkie and..... I have begun to be a little protective of the breed! Anyone have thoughts about this? |

| I have had yorkies since the early 80's when you didn't see many yorkies around. I LOVE the breed. I hate the idea of this all of a sudden ppl have to be cross breeding yorkies with every damn breed there is, even pit bulls. I have had the same experience with ppl mostly because my boy is big at 12 pounds, they will ask what breed is that, I say over standard size yorkie, they say I have a tiny yorkie mix, I say I prefer yorkies no matter what size it is. I will say a lot of yorkie mix are adorable and it is what it is, just cannot understand "why" ppl have to start cross breeding, just blows my mind.

| Well sometimes people rescue them but there are so many bad breeders out there and there are many who breed mixes thinking it's ok when it's not. I wouldn't be surprised if 95% of breeders are bad breeders.

I sometimes get the drift that people have a yorkie and don't spay in time or mismanage the heat and have oopsie litters, accidental mating. They then sell the pups as yorkies but no papers etc. I have heard more than once "well, we got a great deal. It was a lady who was getting out of the breeding business so let us have a great deal." Um, NO! Maybe great price, but she forgot to tell you daddy's a Chihuahua? Anyway, I am glad they love their pups. I know we love ours. Chorkie, Paporkie, a Notsureorkie is not a yorkie. A Yorkie is a Yorkie.

I understand what you're saying although I am not asking people.......they are approaching me. I know not all pure breeds meet the so-called "breed standard" either. It's just happened so much lately, that I find myself feeling like if every dog with "some" yorkie in them is a yorkie, then there really is no such thing as a Yorkie.

YT 1000 Club Member | I understand what you are saying, but I have a Yorkie mix. He looks more like a Yorkie than a Chinese Crested, so it is easier to just say he is a Yorkie. I also have 2 pure bred Yorkies (a traditional and a Parti) so when I have all 3 dogs out and people ask me what they are it is so much easier to just say they are Yorkies since 2 are pure bred and one is half and looks so much like the Parti Yorkie that the next question is if they are siblings. So some of us don't mean to just say ours are Yorkies, but it is so much easier. My mix is my pride and joy. He knows over 20 tricks and is very well trained. The pure breds are both rescues and are great dogs, but they don't know nearly what the mix does as I got him as a puppy and was able to train him the way I wanted him trained. Also, some of us love the breed so much that we hate to even get into the discussion that we have a mix. All my dogs are fixed when I get them or in the case of the puppy the day he turned 6 months he was fixed because I was not looking to breed him or any of my others. I just want some good companion dogs to keep my company and make me happy.

| I have two mixes that I rescued together. I just call them Morkies. They don't really look like Yorkies or Maltese but they have mostly the Yorkie personalities. I kind of think of them as Yorkie mixes because they act like terriers. I am just happy to give these deserving little ones a loving home since they had a terrible start in life. I love Yorkies so much though and think they are the best dogs. It just worked out that I found these two who needed a home. It doesn't bother me that they are mixed. I love them just the way they are.

| I understand about wanting to protect the breed. Most people though just love little dogs and want to talk about their own little dogs. I only get protective of the breed when people ask if DInky is a "teacup." I use that moment as a time to educate about breeders who breed for size and ignore health issues. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | When I was young there was nothing wrong with saying oh he/she is a mix of something like xyz. We also did not *rescue* I got my dog from the pound or my next door neighbour had a litter etc. No shame in that. We were not *saving* dogs - we wanted a dog and so we got one. We did not say adoption - adoption is for children, or at least it used to be. Back then folks were mainly savey about how to be around strange dogs, gosh gee and golly kids were even trained by their parents to be so... Today not so much. Nothing wrong with saying when asked I think my dog is a mixed breed.

Yesterday the neighbor's frisbee came in my yard and a young man came to my gate to retrieve it. I asked him not to come in the yard because my pups were going crazy barking at him. I explained to him that they were "rescues" and not used to strangers coming in the yard and I wasn't sure how they would react. I told him I couldn't guarantee that they wouldn't bite him. I thought that by telling him that he would understand their "rough" behavior and that they are not normal little puppies that will run to him to get petted. I hate to make my little guys sound like they are not as good as the next dog, but I just want to make people aware so they will approach them slowly and cautiously so they won't startle my already scared little guys. My pups are just recently trusting us enough to willingly (somewhat) let us pick them up. I don't know what they went through for the first 7 or 8 months of their lives but whatever it was it made them terrified of humans.
