| Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth for Dogs So...I've read up a lot on food grade diatomaceous earth for dogs over the past year but wasn't able to find it locally, until a few months ago at a pet store. It seems there are many benefits to feeding this to dogs to get rid of parasites and also to get rid of fleas by applying the powder to the skin. I just did a quick search on YT and I guess there wasn't much support from members in the past for feeding it. But some members found it effective for getting rid of fleas. Scottie has had this skin issue on his belly for the longest time. Actually, he had them as a puppy but it went away by the time he turned 1 year old. But then, those annoying little bumps came back! Little pimples that both the vet and I thought was a staph infection. I have a vet-prescribed ointment that soothes the skin to prevent irritation, but it doesn't cure it. Scottie also tried weeks of the antibiotics prescribed by the vet, who claimed it would heal him from it, but the little bumps still came back! I've read that staph infections are recurring and most people haven't had much luck in getting rid of it for good. Something to do with the dog's immune system maybe? That's why I thought feeding probiotics could maybe help. In addition, whenever we went on a short trip and did short hikes in the mountain - each time we went back home they were bound to get diarrhea (probably from something bad/foreign they ate during the hike). So anyway...about a month ago, I took a leap and tried out the food grade DE. I started with sprinkling a little in their pre-soaked meal. I always soak their kibble for about 5 minutes and drain the water before feeding them (it seems to help with their digestion and forms better poop for them). So, I sprinkle a little bit of DE over the wet kibble and mix it together until the powder dissolves with the moist kibble (reason being, it's not safe for humans or dogs to inhale it). My routine is: soak the kibble, add a little drizzle of krill oil for omega 3, add a sprinkle of probiotics, add a sprinkle of DE, and then mix it all up. I think, my babies are doing well on it so far...(though it's only been a month). Last week, we went on a trip to Whistler mountain and did a little hike. When we came home, no diarrhea (yay!). In addition, Scottie's belly has gradually cleared up over the past month. No more scabs and no more scars. I have yet to determine if it's for sure that the DE is helping. ...and the monitoring continues...

| I personally think that stuff is more dangerous then let on. We don't know the side effects of long term use and they could be pretty bad. When dealing with a powder its almost impossible to not breathe some in. My dad brought a bag into the house and me and my mom made him take it right back out side. I think its playing with fire and dangerous.

| Thanks guys for your insight! I appreciate your warnings... I know there's been a lot of stuff written about DE for and against it. Just out of curiosity, could you take a look at this one: Diatomaceous Earth General Fact Sheet It claims that "There are thousands of non-pesticide products that contain diatomaceous earth. These include skin care products, toothpastes, foods, beverages, medicines, rubbers, paints, and water filters. The Food & Drug Administration lists diatomaceous earth as "Generally Recognized as Safe". "Food grade" diatomaceous earth products are purified. They may be used as anticaking materials in feed, or as clarifiers for wine and beer."What are your thoughts about the facts they've provided? In any case, I got sucked into this other science forum and read a lot about what others think about it here: Diatomaceous earth, food grade, is this really so good , or dangerous ? Maybe I will stick to using it to clean the home of parasites (if needed) rather than feeding my babies (until it's better proven later on)...

The second article is an online discussion forum, so the opinions are all over the place. I would say that diatomaceous earth is more similar to glass than to sand. In botany class, we used to examine diatoms under the microscope--they are very beautiful. Our teacher described their shells as being like very tiny glass containers. Diatoms are extremely small, so eating them wouldn't be as bad as eating pieces of glass, but I would be concerned about the long term effects of eating something abrasive on my digestive system. Any health benefits to eating diatomaceous earth are purely speculative at this time.

| Ditto I agree with all of the concerns expressed and would never use the product. We had a property that was infected by fleas the frankly the DE did absolutely nothing to contain the fleas and created an endless set of problems. It doesn't just go away. It damages everything it comes in contact with. I would really recommend using pureed pumpkin or other bulk forming, water balancing fiber to correct your dog's stool. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm not against DE and have read plenty of favorable outcomes about it; it's pretty interesting. But if you're seeing recurrent staph intermedius (ie, this is pyoderma) infections, then I'd suspect allergies first. I'd also recommend just reviewing symptoms of hypothyroidism and Cushings - only bc both of those cause recurrent/chronic skin and ear infections if untreated or undiagnosed.

I agree that the diarrhea is probably caused by something he is eating or drinking on his trips to the wilderness, so monitor that closely and have him drink only bottled water that you bring with you. If his immune system is weak, he might be susceptible to bacteria that wouldn't bother a normal dog. Keep us posted on his progress!

| Thanks guys! Seeing that the recommendation for DE is to take it for a month to get rid of 'stuff' and it's been a month, I had taken them off DE. As pstinard suggested, I'm going to continue my routine (without DE now) and monitor the belly. I like your thinking...to isolate what may be actually helping. Will keep you posted!!

| Well, we gave it to our Yorkie, in addition to his meds, when he had Giardia. We sprinkled it in his food, and he had no issues. I think it might have helped to kill the parasite, because his infection cleared after the first round. I guess like everything else, do your research, and decide what works best for you. Quote:

| DE Gosh, I use DE every other month to detox my body. Food Grade DE is oure silica, NOT glass or any other harmful chemical. Please research for facts. Diatomaceous Earth To consume DE orally, start with half a teaspoon and work up to two heaping tablespoons. Mix thoroughly in four ounces of water. Drink immediately and follow with another eight ounces of water. Take on an empty stomach. Continue drinking water throughout the day, because DE can cause constipation. Initially, you may experience a Herxhemier reaction, which can cause abdominal discomfort and flu-like symptoms. This is a normal response to detoxing, as parasites and pathogens die, releasing their toxins into your system for elimination. The symptoms disappear after a few days. Add diatomaceous earth to your diet to detox parasites that can contribute to food intolerance, nausea, bowel discomfort, pain, itching, asthma, sinus infections, Morgellon’s disease, and a host of other allergic-type reactions. DE detoxes mercury, cadmium, lead and other heavy metals; removes poisons from chemtrails, radiation and may alleviate the effects of GMOs. DE possesses antibacterial, anti-fungal and antiviral properties. In addition to detoxing and destroying pathogens, diatomaceous earth helps to lower blood pressure and contributes to the production of collagen to improve skin tone, strengthening the tendons and joints.
