But if you're seeing recurrent staph intermedius (ie, this is pyoderma) infections, then I'd suspect allergies first. I'd also recommend just reviewing symptoms of hypothyroidism and Cushings - only bc both of those cause recurrent/chronic skin and ear infections if untreated or undiagnosed.
I got so bogged down in the discussion of diatomaceous earth that I forgot about the underlying problem! It's important to determine the root cause of the problem, so follow Ann's advice and get Scottie checked out for underlying causes at the vet. However, if Scottie is doing well on his current routine, then the best thing to do would be continue to do what you are doing (probiotics, krill oil, soaked kibble, etc.). You might see if he still does well if you take the diatomaceous earth out of the routine. If he does worse, then put him back on it and if he improves again, stick with it. Just be cautious that the dust does not get into the environment where it can be inhaled. It sounds like you are mixing it with water first, so that's good.

I agree that the diarrhea is probably caused by something he is eating or drinking on his trips to the wilderness, so monitor that closely and have him drink only bottled water that you bring with you. If his immune system is weak, he might be susceptible to bacteria that wouldn't bother a normal dog. Keep us posted on his progress!
