Yeah, I'd honestly give it with every single vax he gets going forward. I'd skip the shot and just give it yourself PO, 30-45 mins prior. The dose is 1-2mg/lb. I'd give the 1mg dose this time, see how it goes - but do feel comfortable to give the 2mg as well. If there is ever a bug sting - always then give the 2mg dose.

Thumper had a reaction at the site of injection. I got him the 3 year rabies shot which I probably won't do again because of how he reacted. Thumper is the most mellow dog I know does not bite or bark. However, the next day after the shot he would try and bite my hand and growl if I went any where near the injection site. I got so concerned because I never saw it before. The doctor said it should go away in a few days and it did.

You have to get rabies because of the law no real way around it unless it almost kills your dog. When Joey got his rabies as a puppy he got a lump that took months to go away. It doesn't seem he had the lump this time. Ask your vet for pain meds when he gets another shot because it sounds like he was in a good amount of pain and that can make dogs snap.

Just to clarify, I wont get him the 3 year shot but the one every year next time around. I am hoping a smaller dosage won't effect him as much. I definitely will ask for pain meds in the future.

They are the same shot so that would be over vaccinating to do it every year.

Runty is 2 yrs old and 12.5 Lbs......received two vaccines (Rabies + distemper DHPPV) ..and after aprox 2 hours his ears and lips were super pink...and he was afraid of his own shadow....kept running and hiding under my bed....We took him to the emergency room ( was a Sunday)... they gave him a Benadryl shot and we kept giving Benadryl at home..

Never again 2 vaccines together !!!!

That's scary. I had to take Joey on emergency vet trips twice when he got shots as a puppy.

It is the *exact* same shot, there is no different shot. The difference is by law - as to whether you're allowed to have it expire in 1yr or in 3yrs. So, you for sure want to stay on the every 3 year plan so you're giving less vaccines -- and this means you cannot ever allow that vaccine duration to expire before getting the next one by the correct due date. If it does expire, that means you get the vaccine, then you are forced to have a 1 year duration - at which time you get the vaccine again, and then you may have it expire in 3 years if you got it by the due date.

Hope that's not too confusing....?!

I actually got Joeys a month early because I was worried something might happen and he has to get two other shots so I'm spacing them out.

My girlfriends Yorkie is 14 years old. Lives in Boston. She has never given him anything but first shots, distemper, rabies, booster every three years and 3 heart worm pills a year. He's in the best health ever! Not ALL vaccines have to be given. Just the vet's way of making more money. Now most of you may scream about this, but after reading about this dog and that dog in a coma like state, laying still, this one vomiting etc.....something to think about. I personally don't do the Lyme because he hardly goes into grass and I'm in the NorthEast. AND no Lepto either.

I'm sorry but you keep saying vets just do something and push something just to make money and that's not really true about most. Of course there are bad vets but the majority isn't. You don't make a million dollars being a vet. I live in Maryland which is a very expensive state to live in a the average yearly income for a vet here is $60,000-$70,000. And if there like my vet they are lucky if they get two days off. My vet doesn't go vaccine happy. After getting the one year rabies shot they get the three year and that's per the law in most places they have to have the one year before the three year. Dap is every three years after the puppy booster. Although I stopped in on my girl after she turned 7 and my vet had no issues with that. My puppy did not get Lepto and after a few years ok doing it with my girl I stopped (it really depends on your area and what you do with your dog). My girl had Lyme vaccine twice and I stopped and I'm not sure that I will be doing Lyme with my pup. I choose to do bordatella and do the nasal one and have with my girl for 10 years an no issues. Only giving heartworm prevention three times a year is extremely risky and I won't risk it with my dogs they are my life and it's not worth the risk.

But that's YOU and YOU can do what YOU like for your dog. You make it sound cruel if one doesn't get a specific shot. It is been proved that you cannot escape Lyme with or without shot. There are parts of Maryland I would never want to live plus they are making it a 'sanctuary state.' Just saying.

I'm not a fan of Lyme or lepto vax either.

But why are you thinking that keeping him out of the grass will keep him safe from Lymes...? He can get Lymes indoors or outdoors...just depends on where the tick happens to be...

Nope I never did that at least not that I can see. I might have done that with heartworms meds but I will stand strong by that. It's a little rediculous to be an adult picking on some one else's state! I was born here,raised here and will die here all happily. Our governor who is also awesome plans to veto that but it is one of the rules we not talk about politics.
