You have to get rabies because of the law no real way around it unless it almost kills your dog. When Joey got his rabies as a puppy he got a lump that took months to go away. It doesn't seem he had the lump this time. Ask your vet for pain meds when he gets another shot because it sounds like he was in a good amount of pain and that can make dogs snap.
