| What exactly do I look for when buying a Yorkie? I see so many ads whether it is craigslist, facebook, etc. Some of the breeders say that the parents are with them. However, if I go to their place, what do I look for in the Yorkie I'm trying to buy? Ex: Medical statements? Illness? P.s: It's been very long since I've owned a dog, so I have no idea if they are healthy or not (Never owned a Yorkie). Also, I don't really care if it's registered or not since I'm not trying to breed it. Sorry for my ignorance haha. |

| I'm not certain as to Yorkie-specific, but I would think you'd look for all those things always considered when choosing a dog. Age, is coat shiny, eyes bright, is dog alert and active; is it responsive; does it settle somewhat when held; does dog appear interested in what's happening around it...Of course, very important is what you feel for that animal. Do you feel a connection, something special, with the dog? Does it just feel right? I'm sorry, I know some of this is rather esoteric and subjective. However, I'm quite confident that well-informed, very experienced members here will be able to provide you excellent and clear traits, information, et al, which will help you immensely when it comes to getting you the best Yorkie possible! |

| If I were to be looking for a puppy, I would look for a breeder that shows their dogs. A breeder that shows, breeds for their next champion, they research generations back to ensure there are no genetic defects. They put time, money and effort into getting quality puppies. You may pay more for the puppy but you will know you are getting a healthy baby and will save money down the road on vet bills. That is NOT to say a puppy from a show breeder will NEVER get sick. But that is the route I would take. There are many BYB (back yard breeders) I would keep away from craigs list.Research what ever breeder you are interested in. Good luck.

| I agree with much of what has already been said. My experience in puppy shopping has always been to start at the breed specific club, check local breeders (people who show their dogs in confirmation), I want to know the health of the line first and foremost. Is the breeder someone of good character, where are the dogs housed, do you feel comfortable with the condition of the dogs, home, behavior of the seller. When its time to meet the puppy, is the puppy alert, clear eyes, free of sickness, then check temperament.
