| Increasing frustration with neighbors :( So here in Hawaii, the land between the street and the sidewalk (and including the sidewalk) belongs to the city and county of Honolulu. It is the owner of the house that is responsible for maintenance, but it is not their yard. All the houses have a bit of a retaining wall and fence, so it's clear where their property actually starts. I walk my little Lucy a few times a day since I have literally zero square feet of yard for her (my house is in a complex all built into a single residential property - the house & driveway are so built up, there's no room for any actual "yard"). So I have no choice but to walk her and let her do her business in those median areas around my hood. The problem is that people are becoming increasingly territorial. I've heard everything from "how would you like it if I came and threw s**t all over your yard?" to a simple "thanks for just letting her go shi-shi (Hawaiian/Japanese for pee)." The thing is, it's frustrating for a number of reasons. First, there are stray cats and dogs that are the ones that leave the piles of poo and diarrhea all over the place. I ALWAYS have one, if not two, baggies to clean up after my pup. Secondly, again, it's city property. I think people genuinely think my dog is pooping on their yard. She's not. Thirdly, there are a lot of dog owners in my hood but they ALL just leave their dogs chained up outside 24/7. Okay, not all are chained, but about half are, but in any case, it makes for a frustrating walk when I have to weave back and forth across the street numerous times to avoid unfriendly people or vicious dogs. *sigh. I don't know what I'm hoping for. I know if I bring it up that I always clean up after my pup and that it's city property anyway, it'll seem confrontational. I'm not in the mood to be beat up by a 400lb Samoan (again) who feels like I was antagonizing his girl. I've only got less than a year left here, but I'm trying to make it without creating any enemies. Anyone else live in a neighborhood that's hostile to pets? I'm thinking when I move, I may just try to pad-train her so I don't have to deal with this. Or maybe I'll actually have a yard... That would be awesome!

| You are in a difficult situation. Your baby needs to pee somewhere, and you are cleaning up her tiny poops. Our home in Chicagoland had grassy areas between the sidewalk and the curb/street. Same situation as yours: belonged to the town, but homeowner was responsible for mowing and maintenance. I sympathize with homeowners who have to clean up other dogs' poop left behind in their yards. I also understand homeowners who keep perfect lawns and resent pet pee burns on their grass, or they don't like the thought of walking through peed-on-grass. There isn't a perfect solution to make everyone happy. I would keep a bright poop bag dispenser prominently displayed on your leash. You can also tie a bag to the leash before it is used to indicate you clean up. My neighbors always see me carrying the bag, so they know I clean up. For peeing, I don't know what to suggest. Try to avoid homes where people have expressed their anger. I drive to take my boys to an office park to walk them. That isn't practical if your pup is doing strict outdoor potty with no yard. We use pads in addition to outdoor. Hang in there. 1 more year!

| Because Piper has barked at my neighbor, he's decided she barks every time I let her out--not true, at all! I pointed out to him many is the time I've been working in yard for hours, with Piper there with me, not making a sound. But he has made up his mind and truth/logic have no place in his viewpoint. I know that he is incorrect and I'm o:k knowing Pipe is more quiet than not. You know you're operating as a considerate and responsible canine-owner so never mind those who can't/won't see that. You know and that's what is important--good job, by the way. And as stated previously---one more year---you can do this!!! (pic of Pipe about 1/2 second from barking!!!!) |

| When I had dogs that were leash walked I always walked in the street with them to avoid what you are going through. I now live in a kinda community. Cody basically uses the yard but we do take walks weather permitting. I of course always take baggies for "just in case" I MAKE SURE they are clearly SEEN. We have no sidewalks, lawns come right to the road. I never allow Cody near the edge of lawns, not even to sniff. We stay in the road. Is there anyway you can walk your baby in the street.

Unlike many of my neighbors, I keep my boys from marking mailbox posts and garbage cans and flowers/shrubs. Irks me that some people let their dogs mark our recycling toter that we bring into the garage.

| I think one thing that makes it worse is that there are so many people living in each house and so many that are unemployed that have nothing better to do than sit on the porch and get mad at passersby, for whatever reason. I was once told to walk my dog on the other side of the street because this guy's dog would alway bark at Lucy as we passed. Now, in my mind, that's what dogs do. I didn't see it as any big deal. But he said I was antagonizing his dog and that 'I'd be sorry if his dog hopped the fence and attacked us.' First of all, it's HIS dog that would not be breathing after the encounter were that to happen and secondly, if he had ANY situational awareness, he would know there was an equally vicious dog on the other side of the street chained up outside 24/7 just like his. In any case, I think one of the issues is that Lucy sniffs and smells and checks EVERYTHING out. It'll take us 5 minutes just to walk 100 meters since she stops to smell every blade of grass for five hours. So to some, seeing a dog stopped, then moving on without the owner bending over and picking something up, may appear like she's pooping all over the place with no one cleaning it up. I think non-dog owners (or at least people that don't care about their dogs) think dogs poop a hundred times a day and every time they squat they're pooping. Oh well. 1 more year.
