| 1st Day Back to work. Hi everyone, I just thought I would share my experience leaving my 4 month old Nemo after spending a month off. I do work 12 hours with a break halfway through so I'm able to pop home and walk him half way through the day. Lesson learned...a crate or "ex pen"only works at night for me. Confining him otherwise created anxiety for him. Ive tried both and maybe it seems like I'm "caving" but I found giving my dog a safe gated room helped tremendously. He'll also be going to day care twice a week to help with socializing, even though I have 2 amazing kitties that are getting past the point of just tolerating him that keep him occupied. Another lesson. Walking. Not just 15 minutes...a good hour helps. I've been taking him on different routes just to keep it interesting. Just thought I would share. This is my 1st time owning a Yorkie. I knew it would be work but I did not anticipate the Huge personality or Smarts. Glad I have this site for support. |

| Aww. You're not caving. I had to do the same thing with Barney when he was a pup. It was just too much for him to be crated.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | So glad you've found help here . You're most definitely not "caving" -- you're only doing what's right (what fits) for *your* dog. Not all dogs or animals can tolerate tight confinement, and who can blame them...? You're doing GREAT! And super great job on the long walks too - you've no idea how good that is for them! Well, you probably do actually .

| You sound like you're on the right track! Happy to hear you're learning as you go! It must be really hard to leave him at home now that you're back at work. I remember when I first got Scottie and I had to go to work. It was heart-wrenching and I would literally just think about him the entire day! And excellent job with the one hour walks! I also took Scottie on various routes when he was a puppy. He had SO much energy, even the 1-hr walks didn't ever tire him out. Hope to hear more updates with your little one

| You sound like a wonderful mom. I am a huge believer in long walks. My little girl, Katie, is seven, and we walk daily, often three miles at a time, sometimes more. We also play a lot, and I know the exercise keeps her healthier. My last Yorkie, Ashley, walked daily, usually about two miles or more a day, up until a week before she passed away close to her seventeenth birthday. My vet could not believe how strong her heart and lungs were for a dog her age and also how fast she was. I read something that was posted on YT by a dear friend of mine who knows a great deal about movement and exercise. It is from Puppy Culture, and it wrote how much exercise a puppy should have at each stage of their life. The author raises bull terriers whose growth plates close much later than a Yorkie's growth plates at approximately eighth months. It's a really interesting article, but I thought you'd find the quote below relevant. https://www.puppyculture.com/tablet/...-exercise.html "Probably the biggest cause of growth plate and soft tissue injury is repetitive exercise with a young puppy. So, until he’s about 18 months old, long hikes and walks are out and lots of free-play sessions are in."

| This is a link to appropriate exercise by age. It is for a bigger dog, so since Yorkies mature earlier, they might be able to do more earlier. https://www.puppyculture.com/tablet/exercise-chart.html

| That is a very long time for any dog to be confined, even with a short break. I am glad you have found a way to make him more comfortable. When I was working long hours we managed to keep our little guy in the kitchen while we were gone with puppy pads. As he got older he was given free run of the house. He would sit in a window and watch for us until we got home. Living in a cage for the majority of the day is no life for any dog...and your right - exercise after being inactive is very important. |

| Thanks for all the support. I love the long walks and believe excercise is key. I'm also sending my Nemo to doggy daycare to socialize once or twice a week while I work. Again thanks

| In my case I am sort of, kind of force to walk Duchess......the little bugger has so much energy she could literally run from NY to California and back again. |
