That is a very long time for any dog to be confined, even with a short break. I am glad you have found a way to make him more comfortable.
When I was working long hours we managed to keep our little guy in the kitchen while we were gone with puppy pads. As he got older he was given free run of the house. He would sit in a window and watch for us until we got home. Living in a cage for the majority of the day is no life for any dog...and your right - exercise after being inactive is very important.
