| Newly adopted 8 year old Hey Guys, Im so glad i stumbled upon this forum because i am lost. I have found Dolly (8 year old yorkie) on the street yesterday, after taking her to the humane society to find if she has a microchip and her owner, i learned that her owner gave her up cause she just gave birth and her babies are allergic. she never gave us any information but that the dog is 8 years old and goes by Dolly and shes spayed. Now, knowing what she will go through in the shelter I immediately took her home. I have another puppy, he is a 1.5 years old cocker spaniel thats very friendly and they got along really well. now my main problem is, I feed my cocker spaniel (Nature's Recipe dog food, chicken and rice flavor) but unfortunately this past week hes been having an upset stomach and diarrhea and so we put him on a bland diet for a couple of days. Now she gets home, started exploring, and i bring out a plate that i had and pour some dog food for her, she turns and eats the bland diet food that i had for my cocker, she ate ALLL OF IT. My main issue is that my husband and I work and we do not have time to cook for the dogs everyday and i know that dog food is healthier for their teeth and it has more nutrients and i would rather stick to that. so i dont know how to switch her over to dog food, i have no idea what she ate before and what she likes. I tried to give her treats she WILL NOT eat them, she will just try smelling it and then look the other way which will make it very hard to train her. she is housebroken, she knows where she needs to do her business and so far no accidents at all and she seems comfortable. she licks me all the time, sits by me and duh she devoured my dogs bland diet as soon as she walked into the house. any suggestions for food and treats would be welcomed. Also i think she was a spoiled brat who did whatever she wanted in her older home and i need to change that, but without treats/rewards, how am i going to do that? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome. So glad you took this girl in ! I feed raw (Primal or Natures Variety)...but if you want a good kibble, I'd recommend Natures Logic. One thing to try is to sprinkle Parmesan Cheese (from the green can) on the food which can make it more appealing/pungent to dogs.

| Hi- I was having an issue with my dog n pup eating each other's food. After mych research, I switched them both to acana. They both love it and no tummy troubles for either (my adult couldn't tolerate blue or call of the wild). I wet the food for the puppy good luck! |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I'm glad too that you took in Dolly. I agree with Ann's food suggestions. Happy to hear she is potty trained. Good girl! What kind of unwanted behaviors is she exhibiting? She might appear spoiled, as you wrote, perhaps because she is so excited about having loving attention. If she doesn't respond to treats for rewards, you could try praise to shape behavior. Some dogs also respond to toys. I keep a storage container with a push button top release full of kibble on the counter for most rewards. My boys respond to praise and they get excited when they hear me push the button to open the kibble can. Probably a matter of just finding out what she likes and what will stimulate her. Best wishes!

| Welcome to YT and bless you for taking this girl home. For treat rewards have you tried boiled boneless chicken cutlets? I agree she may "seem" spoiled to you, but as Maximo wrote it may be just she is so happy to have some attention, love, and a new brother. Remember, she is in new surroundings, new family, new schedule. Can you call the prev. owner to see what she was feeding Dolly before she "threw her away" . I would also feed them in separate rooms or, feed your boy first with Dolly in another room where she is not able to get to his food, when he is finished then feed her. Training you will need LOTS of patience, treats and LOTS of hand clapping PRAISE. She may not have ever had treats and reason she turns up her nose. Absolutely great she is potty trained.

| Thank you all so much for the helpful suggestions. i think she is still overwhelmed. Her behavior is good so far. only thing i noticed is that she eats on tissue paper (if she finds any, it happened only once) she might have some habits that I can tone down by time but overall she is doing so good. She is vocal too, if i pet Cooper (my cocker spaniel) and I ignore her, she will bark and jump like there is no tomorrow now both of them did not eat at all yesterday lol but i'm guessing its just strange for both of them, cuz im switching cooper back to his normal kibble and obviously she is switching from whatever she was eating. I'll try the Parmesan trick today and update you guys. |

I'll bet she's overwhelmed. She's probably happy that she has a dog buddy too! I had an issue with my previous dog who ate and tore up ALL used tissue she could access from all garbage cans. It was super frustrating! Make sure you nip this habit asap or you'll have to deal with it forever. So when I first came home my little Scottie, I made sure to let him know that digging anything out of the garbage can was a big no no. Even if he sniffs at it, I give a firm "NO". When he turns away and leaves, I give him me sweet voice "gooood boy" I agree - I don't have time to cook for my dogs either. The only time I boil chicken breast for them is if they have upset stomach. Otherwise, it's kibble. Both Scottie and Casie are on Orijen (though some dogs have tummy issues with it due to the high protein content). I say...if she's not eating the kibble so far, start slowly with her - she will eat soon enough when she's hungry. She sounds like she's in good health! Happy for you

| Ok today was her first accident. she has been doing fine in terms of going outside to pee/poop because we would just take her every hour or two, and she before we go to bed and she would hold it through the night until we woke up and took her out. but today we woke up and we found poop on our carpet, i told her bad girl and yelled a little bit and you could tell she felt ashamed and just hid under a table, but I dont know if it is just a one time thing or i'm going to have to potty train all over again. Cooper (my other cocker spaniel) is trained to ring a bell for me whenever he wants to go outside. for her, we would just make sure we take her outside constantly until we establish training and what have you.] any suggestions you guys? we are going away for the weekend and we will have my cousin come into the house three times a days to let them out and feed them but now i'm getting kind of worried that maybe she is comfortable now and feeling more secure so she will start messing around in the house. what do you guys think? |

| Just as a heads up, tissue, paper towel, napkin tearing up seems to be a "yorkie thing" lol. .....My Cody is a rescue boy, he was a surrender, he was spoiled rotten but had and still has good manners, thank heavens he is not a trash can snooper although I do take any and all food items to my outside trash to eliminate any temptation. None of my now passed girls ever went for the kitchen trash, so just taking preclusion Cody will not start bad habits.

| lol, yes this I have also been told. I have heard the UGO is a good choice for pups that like to shred their pads.

Except last week, Casie was spayed, and I've been keeping her indoors all week and half to prevent any infections from outdoorsie stuff. It's been a little chaotic! Oh...and sorry for the sidetrack-post, but the lazy me is really wanting to make my own porch potty for my condo balcony so I don't have to do anymore midnight pees before I've showered and all clean for bed lol. This looks so easy and simple to do: DIY porch potty - Album on Imgur

| I would not let Dolly have full reign of the house until she can prove herself. Put her in the area that has washable floors like the kitchen. She may have had an accident due to the change of foods and getting adjusted to your home. So so glad you rescued her!!!!!

| potty training at the age of 8 Hey Guys i'm in deep s**t now. so its been two weeks now since we found Dolly and she has been doing ok around our other dog Cooper and doing ok overall. no i wake up every other day with a poop accident waiting for me in the living room. i try my best to give food no later than 7 pm but sometimes it doesnt happen. I leave to work in the morning and leave food and water for them all day but they wont eat until i am home and sometimes later too. Cooper has been trained to ring a bell to get out and poop and he would hold it all night until i wake up and let him out but for her this isnt the case and i dont know what to do now. is she too old to hold it? or should i wake up in the middle of the night to let her out or what should i do? also i do not want to have a weewee pad in the house and do not want to confuse BOTH of them of whether to go inside or outside, i want to be consistent that inside is a NO NO. ive discovered she used to be hit or beaten up cuz whenever i start shouting if she makes a mistake she gets super scared and hides. also if i wanna pick her up she pulls back a little as if shes scared i'll hit her. ALL THE HELP IS NEEDED PLEASE |
