| I am not sure if this should be here It maybe should be under grooming , but I am not sure. My question is this. Spice has owned me for a year now and she is 19 mo old. One of my worse fears have been about her trachea . I have never put a collar on her and use only buddy belts . Are the trachea's really that tender that a collar could harm her??? The reason for asking , I do not have a groomer for 80 miles and I groom her myself. For some reason she has gotten to where she wont let me trim her with scissors or the clippers. She will squiggle and squirm so much I cant hang onto her. I bought her a regular grooming table but I am so afraid of putting anything around her neck I havent used it. If she would hold still I could have it done in 5 min or less. I have tried treats, gentle talking , and everything I could think of. Does anyone have any ideas???? This thing of snipping here and there when she is on my lap just isnt working. |

This thing of snipping here and t Have you trained her to stay at all? Like stay in a seated position on the floor? Have you used corrections at all in the training? Do you know how to train stay> This is pro forma for training stay on grooming table. I don't like the nooses especially since my big boy had a bad accident with one ( my fault of course) Dang it all I gotta make a beginners video on basic bathing n grooming

| Yes she knows stay and normally does this very well. This just all started for what I can see is no good reason. I have never accidentally cut her or nipped her in anyway. |

| What about having a second person distract her with the treats after each snip you make while she's still in the "stay" position. Maybe she thinks the grooming table is too cold for her little paws?

| As Gemy was indicating, my biggest concern would be that she might fall from the grooming table and be held by the neck or wherever you put the collar (some loops go around the body). Working in your lap is difficult. I trained my boys on a counter using my body to block them from falling. Although they are well trained, I still keep one hand on them at all times. It's going to take a lot of patience, but definitely keep working on training. Be calm, confident, and patient. Even my boys can still frustrate me sometimes when they are not in the mood for grooming. Don't try to do everything at once. I usually trim my boys' paws and ears and then let them go. I brush teeth separately. Comb faces and clean ears separately. Bathe and then dry. Give them a break, then comb out thoroughly. I break up the grooming. Granted, you probably want to do all of the trimming on one day. I also employ a lot of massage and sweet talking. That helps them enjoy the process too.

I admire you owners who are able to groom your dogs. I am far too nervous to think of trimming Monty. His hair does not grow very fast though which is a good thing. He also doesn't knot or mat very much which is a pleasant surprise! Black toe nails ... shudder! Won't even attempt it. He does sit/stand fairly well for me though. I have worked with "focus" with him so I can now give him a treat while his eyes are glued to mine. He also knows "stay" and "leave it" to the point that I can put the most delicious treat between his paws with him laying down and he won't touch it until I say okay. The layer I am working on now is placing him in a position on the counter and getting him to hold it. Tricky! His wee mind is trying to compute lol. I am hoping that when he fully understands that I don't want him to move, then he will be better able to respond to "come" as he will be more in tune with looking to me for direction. At least this is my hope. When we are out in the world ... it's all way too exciting. Life is just amazing .... | |

| I am certainly NOT a professional groomer, and I do no fancy "show grooming/clipping"....I just basically shave mine all down close with a #7 or even a #10 blade.....hard to make a mistake with those....but I have been around 3 dogs at different times, at different groomers, that have almost hung themselves from that restraining hangman's noose they use to keep them on the table! I never use that loop, I use a halter on mine and I just manage to cut around it.....I simply will NOT use a hangmans noose around my dogs neck as a restraining device! |

| Oh my no this is not a noose on the table , it goes around the body. The reason I was asking about the trachea is because as I said I am scared to death to put a collar on her and wondered if I was paranoid. Before I got the table I used my kitchen counter and blocked her from falling with my body in front of her. She had started this " You are not trimming me" thing then . That is why I got the table. Yorkiemom I too am not a groomer and use the trimmer as short as possible . It seems her face and feet grow so fast . And around her little tiny butt. These are the very places I want and need to trim and she says NO. LOL Little brat LOL I will do as Maximo suggested and go slow and easy and just do one little area a day. Thank you once again my dear mentors! ♥ |
