A. Generally, the dog must stay on the floor, or the person must carry the dog. For example, if a person with diabetes has a glucose alert dog, he may carry the dog in a chest pack so it can be close to his face to allow the dog to smell his breath to alert him of a change in glucose levels.

Sorry in a hurry, but I did found this. Will post more later.
no problem; and It's great, since I'd have spaced this particular question out with our trainer. I need to know about how to do this. Sometimes my limbs will jerk and I can't control it, and the charlie horses aren't just sometimes. I look forward to learning more.

I have read some great books in general on this subject and read a lot of internet information as well.

The ADA laws covers trained service dogs, they have nothing to do with service dogs in training. Whether or not your SDIT has rights to public access would depend on your state.

Thank you. I was just about to post earlier. My girl just went up our stairs by herself. I thought was going to have a heart attack when I felt her fur brush my legs. she was there looking MIGHTY pleased with herself. It's off topic, but I had to love on her a lot and give her a few treats. I'll read asap.

Wasn't meant at all to be snarky! I just don't like seeing attitudes of entitlement like "If I want her near my freaking food, I can" ... no, you can't, unless the dog is a service dog with a trained task (if you were talking about the Trader Joes incident). I respect your disability and feel for your situation and if you train your dog as a service dog for your specific needs, that is of course a different story.

Believe me, I take my dog basically everywhere I can!! I love it, he loves it! But I respect the rules as much as they often suck. My dog being in a grocery store is IMO no more unsanitary than little kids wiping snot and boogers on the carts... but unfortunately, there are rules set in place for a reason and if they let their guard down for one, then whose to say the guy with a big Great Dane comes walking in the store isn't allowed in now? It's a slippery slope.

Again I wish more places allowed dogs; I am lucky I live in a very dog friendly town, he's allowed in most of the shops, almost all restaurants with outdoor seating etc...

But you can't get mad over someone getting annoyed with a dog in a bag/carrier in a grocery store where legally they are not supposed to be in the first place. I said I thought it was common knowledge because I honestly think it would seem appropriate that a dog wasn't allowed in Trader Joes. It wouldn't be on my list of places to try and bring him, ya know?

I think my two furries are better behaved than a lot of the kids I've seen in public places. But as Britster says, rules are set in place for a reason. One of the biggest reason is to protect themselves from getting sued.

Yeah, wish we could take them everywhere. In my area Walmart is off limits no way can you bring your smallest dog in, and Target is the same way. Ruger & I just go to Home Depot, Lowes, pet stores and they just love him at Ross.
Actually that's enough for my hyper little one. Of course we don't go to all those in one day. I would just rather be home with my little angel. I go grocery shopping only when his Daddy is home.
Best of luck to all you that can take your babies in lots of stores.

Default Bed Bath and Beyond

Bed Bath and Beyond is pet friendly now - in all their stores. The store manager here told me their boss said - if someone comes in with a pet pig that's okay. They realized how much pet lovers spend in their stores and changed their policy.

I called Costco, and spoke with the trainer. Chewie IS allowed in my arms during training. Training. Only. that's a relief.

Our walmarts don't care.. whatsoever. and neither does just about any store that I see. I'm sure different people in this valley have different experiences, but, Shoot, my chewie's breeder admitted she takes HER huge dogs in walmart. And, she's not alone, either. I don't know if it's more laid back here, or what it is. But, I called the stores I go to, and Yes, in arms, fine. on leash- even better. On leash ONLY after training is over. At the very least, I got a lot of fantastic information. Thank you!!!

I also called a few other places, but costco is strict- especially since that CA incident. I figured they'd be the very best source of info, along with my trainer.
