| Should I Get Him Neutered?? So my Morkie is 6.5 Months old now weighing at around 3.5-4 lbs, he is just the most adorable well behaved disciplined dog. I am on the fence whether to get him neutered or not, I just cant find justification for it because he is not AT ALL aggressive and he's not even humping, very docile. My only hang up is that when I got the puppy with the 'Health Guarantee', it gets void if I don't get him neutered by 8 months of age, so that's something I have to seriously consider. Can any of you please give me any advise on what you think I should do. Thanks guys! |

| I forgot to also mention that I never take him around other dogs, my Vet told me also that he's so small so he doesn't need very long walks, so I just take him down the street and back. |

| Both of my boys are neutered. There is a lot of debate on whether or not it is beneficial to health in the long run, preventing cancer. That kind of health risk is not as great as it is with females. I like that I don't have to worry about my boys potentially getting into trouble with a female dog, especially if we encounter a female in heat. Neutering can prevent marking territory in the house. It's not a guarantee, but definitely a factor. Your boy could be a late bloomer in that department. Really depends on your individual circumstances and environment.

| Size doesn't always dictate amount of exercise needed or desired. Don't be afraid to walk him more just because he is on the smaller side -- if he wants to go more. My neighbor's 3 pound Yorkie is like the Energizer Bunny and can outlast my 9 pounders.

| Thanks for the advise, yea so far he's pretty content with short walks, especially because its cold out, but I guess when he gets older that might change. |

| When he reaches sexual maturity, he will begin hiking his leg and peeing on everything in the house, in the yard, etc. That comes with sexual maturity....you can let him run around with a belly band on 24/7 so he does not mark everything in the house/on the property....you just have to decide if that is something you can adjust to and he can live with. When I came on here years ago....I am sure a couple of people will remember....and joyously championed one of our members who decided to have her little dog spayed, I went on and on about all the right reasons she needed to do it, how wonderful it was that she had made that decision, on and on and on.....and her little girl went in to be spayed, and she didnt survive the procedure.....I was absolutely stunned and heartbroken and I said then I would NEVER again encourage anyone to have their baby spayed/neutered....and I have stood strong to that decision....I remain dedicated to that promise I made myself, as I have NEVER gotten over what happened in that situation, with that members baby girl. YOU make the decision, based on what YOU can live with, and nothing else. You read all the information you can get your hands on, and you dont let anyone talk you into doing anything you are not completely comfortable with, because it is your decision and you must be comfortable and sure of your decision. Good luck with whatever you decide....I am sure it will be a decision you can live with in your own mind and heart. |

| Neutering should be done for one reason only, and that is to prevent testicular cancer. Not to prevent them for leg hiking, neutering "may" prevent leg hiking but is not always a guarantee. Do it as a health prevention. Neutering will not change your dogs personality. What ever I can do to ensure my baby can live a healthier and long life I do. Ask your vet about the pros and cons of neutering vs not neutering, and go from there. Good luck on making the right decision for your little boy.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | With males, it's really a personal preference / decision...and less about health. What if he starts marking though? At that point, neutering may be too late to help with that issue. But, there are intact male dogs who do not mark too, it really just depends on the dog.

| My Beowulf just turned 10 months on Valentines day at 9 1/2 months he became a Marking Monster! He even marked my bed. I put him in his cage for 3 days after that and hes been a really good boy but once we go outside he's marking away. My neighbor had a garage sale and he marked on one of the duffle bags she had on the ground. Luckily he had no more pee coming out My significant other took him to work yesterday and he marked on this brand new pool table that they had just brought in Marking Monster!

| Marking can be contained with him wearing a belly band....all my males have belly bands on them. THAT is a little work, as you have to keep the pad inside clean/dry.....I use "Poise Incontinence Pads, regular length, ultimate absorbancy"....they last 4-6 hours easily, some longer than that, as the males just "spurt" a couple of squirts of urine, to mark what they consider theirs, and these pads will hold quite alot of human urine that we elders dribble as we run to bathrooms!....The urine is wicked away from the surface, so a couple of dribbles/spurts, over 4-6 hours, from a male dog is easily and cleanly contained in one of these pads! | I guess the question I would ask would be, why would you not want to neuter him? |

While it's not ideal to take natural hormones away from our kiddos, the reality is that it can be more problematic to keep the hormones in pets, sadly imo . In females, there can be more of a true health concern in not spaying them....this is less of a case in males as far as health concerns.

| THANK YOU ALL, I will take everything you guys mentioned into serious consideration, plus the whole thing with the Health Guarantee. BTW!....I think some of you here recall me posting a forum about Bloating and Food, well his tests came back fine from the Vet, but I found out myself what the issue was....I switched him to Grain-Free food and now his bloating is gone! I honestly would not have though that would have made a difference, but it did...Cheers! Last edited by Torguy; 02-21-2016 at 04:44 PM. |

| We got Cody neutered at 6 months. I just felt like we should, because I had a female as a child growing up that was never spayed, and she died of cancer at age 12. I am not saying that is what caused it, but I always wondered Good luck with your decision, I am sure you will make the right one for you and your dog. Quote:
