| what's the deal with humpty dumpty We got Anna when she was around 6-7. almost 3 years ago, from a shelter. She had been used as a puppy producer for her entire adult life and her owner got rid of her when she couldn't perform. She was spayed when I got her. We got Willie almost a year ago when he was around 2 years old. His owner was a young college student who chose to not have him fixed in case she might some day want to breed him. I had him neutered when he moved in. So, neither of these dogs should be getting any hormonal kicks. But Willie often gets an urge to do the wild thing when he's around her. This is not the normal, I'm going to dominate you and the whole world kind of performance. Rather this is a feverish, gotta get me some, full on, hip pumping attempt to breed her. He even pants! Of course, she doesn't tolerate that. She's retired. But it's pretty annoying. Any ideas on why he is still feeling the urge? Last night they were both beside me on the couch sleeping and his head was laying on her. A few minutes into the "nap" and his little hips were humping away. I'm pretty sure he was still sleeping during this.

| My Maltese rescue still tries to do this to Zoey. Boy, does she let him have it when he does. I got him when he was around two, newly neutered by the rescue group. He is now about 8 and he still tries to do the dirty to her. I think he was unneutered for so many years that the drive is still there. I just tell him to stop it when he gets going. I don't think there is anything you can do to stop this.

| Humping is not always hormonal or a desire to mate. Sometimes it is just a show of dominance or an outlet for built up energy, more like a human bouncing a leg while sitting. I have 2 neutered boys. Teddy will sometimes hump Max when he is excited. We nicely correct him and he stops. Ann suggested on another thread to give the dog a plush toy to focus on.

| My adopted boy was neutered before he was a year old, I adopted him when he was 2, he was a surrender. I have him a bit over 2 years. NEVER humped anything, what a perfect boy.Christmas Santa bought him a huge teddy bear. Christmas morning when he saw the teddy bear he grabbed it, straddled it and HUMPED it , I made my un-godly NO noise, he jumped off it and I put it away. NO MORE TEDDY=NO MORE HUMPING. I think it is just a natural instinct in male dogs.

| I so agree with all of these, as Barney is the occasional dominance "humper". But Willie takes it to a whole new level, perhaps it's his name? He pants and goes maniacal as if there's nothing in the world to stop him from getting her. When you pick him up, his little hips keep going. Now, mind you, he's itty bitty so it's not like Anna can't put him in his place. But when he gets like this, he is nothing but pure determination. It makes my husband furious because Anna is his sweet little baby. Fortunately it's not all the time, but we never can predict what will spike the mood.

| I'm not going to lie, it is pretty funny. But it's also a little disturbing. His tongue's hanging out, he's panting like crazy, and hips are bouncing up and down. I honestly thought that neutering would take care of the hormones.

| Uni is a spayed girl and humps her [tattered] bed nightly after dinner. Explain that one! Even if she wasn't spayed, she would be on the bottom!

He never humps after breakfast, just after dinner. Oh, and occasionally when we have company he will pull his bed into the middle of the room and put on a show

| OMG when we had the bike shop Uni would do it in front of customers! I know the drill. When she starts dragging around her bed looking for the perfect spot, I know the show's about to start. So I'll nonchalantly move her bed into the back room and keep helping customers. She will pull it right back out and do it in front of everybody!

I would die. Willie doesn't really need an audience to perform, but having an audience doesn't appear to slow him down either. It really is odd, though. It's almost like Anna emits a scent at times. Which shouldn't be possible because she is spayed.
