| Thoughts on Rescuing a Deaf 1 year old pup So I found a Yorkie mix 1 year old on the side of a busy road a week and a half ago. She is super cute no one has claimed her so she is up for adoption. She is under quarantine for rabies, I know she has an ear infection, but the shelter thinks she might be deaf as well. I would really like to take, Milo is 10 years old now and I think can benefit from having a younger dog in the house. I know she saw a vet and has gotten her shots and they will still need to spay her before she is ready to leave the shelter. I plan on asking if I can speak with the Vet that saw her so I know what exactly I would be getting myself into. Does anyone have any experience or words of wisdom for me? I really thing she came into my life for a reason but I want to do what is best for her. Thanks |

| I have no experience or words of wisdom, but GO GET HER NOW!! Whether or not she has "problem" w/hearing, et al, she will bring you incomparable joy and love. I agree that she came into your life for a reason and I think if you don't bring her home, you will wonder about her forever (or maybe that's just me). But I think you already know...you're meant for one another---don't hesitate!! |

| If you are comfortable with having a dog that could be deaf I say GO FOR IT. This baby needs a loving home, who knows what this wee little soul has gone through. It sounds pretty much as if you have already made up your mind that you want her. If she is indeed deaf, IMO, I think it would be hard for this little girl to find a forever home. Everything happens for a reason, she was at the right place at the right time, for you and Milo. Please keep us updated on your decision. Bless you.

| awww...poor doggie...at the same time she is lucky that you are willing to take her! I def believe you should talk to the vet and see her condition...because if you take her you know that that will be her forever home...and not end up on at that shelter because she is deaf...but I do not believe that a deaf dog will cause you issues...she will learn to read you extra more with her eyes! Take her

| Assuming I had the money to take care of them, I would do it. But then again, I always root for the underdog. |

| Thank you all, I went to the Shelter today for a visit, the little stinker is cuter than I remember. I spoke with them regarding my concerns and they explained to me that is is several weeks out before she would be able to be placed in a home, they have to clear up the parasites, and her ear infection and then spay her. They will get a clearer picture from the vet as to weather the deafness is permanent or temporary due to the ear infection and if there are any other health issues to be concerned about. As it stands right now she is mine when she is ready for her forever home. We will see what happens.......hoepfully Milo will be a good big brother and all we be ok |

| I had a pup that became deaf at age 5 - she lives to be 11 years old. We did an obedience class as son as she got used to following me on a leash. She learn all tricks like sit stay, stand, down, and come by using hand signals. She loved learning new signals, probably for the attention, but she learned everything I tried to teach her. She could be easily startled at time so we what he out for that, but she could feel vibrations on the floor when people walking in, most of the time. If you have another dog, that is kind, in the house the new pup will follow that one around and learn the household schedule and such from the older dog. If you have the time for this pup I will wager it will be devoted and a joy!!! I am hoping that after the parasites etc are treated that maybe the pup is not TOTOALLY deaf. Keep us posted, please!

I would jump on this so fast, they would have to run me away from that shelter that rescued her! Hearing issues are an easily surmountable issue....you just cant let her run loose, but shouldnt be doing THAT anyway!! I think, for the rest of your life, you would wonder if it was something that was mean to be and you let it slip thru your fingers....go for it!!!

Also wondered, how do they know if a female is spayed or not without actually going in there? I mean unless you are there while she is in heat, how could you know? I always have a soft spot for strays, esp ones that let you help them instead of running away. And even more esp for stray small dogs. They had to overcome so much to survive out there on their own.

When my Bella was spayed they put a little green "tattoo" on her lower belly so if I should take her to another vet they would know. Congrats on taking this little one into your home when it time. I hope she brings your family so much joy.

| Really? Uni doesn't have a tattoo, and many of my fosters that got spayed under my care didn't get that either. I've never heard of that, but I think that's a good idea that should be done by all vets. That way no spayed dog would have to go through another surgery for naught.

| Great news you can have her. Praying once that ear infection is cleared up she will have some hearing if not all. My boy is neutered and adopted, I saw a little green mark by his man parts, asked my vet what it was, she said a tattoo to show he was neutered. Back in the 80's & 90's my girls were spayed and had no markings, it is great that they do a lil tattoo so pup does not have to under go surgery for nothing. Please keep us up-dated on the outcome of this sweet little girl.
