Am worried about Lacy!

Many new-puppy guides advise "try not to overwhelm your new puppy with too much activity during this initial adjustment period"—by meeting family, friends, and taking him/her places—because it could be too stressful for your new puppy.
For over 40 years, I've had Westies, Yorkies, and Biewers—mostly Yorkies (and usually 2 and 3 at a time), only 3 would've made excellent, certified therapy dogs; almost all would've been good volunteer hospital/retirement-home visitors (where therapy-dog certification is not required)—and several did just that.
We can hide our frustrated, angry, disappointed feelings from friends and family, but not from our furry kids; they sense our feelings and react to these feelings in all different ways—may be "act-out" would be a better word to describe their responses.
We don't know who Lacy will be, but she will be GREAT...she will be LACY! If we let her BE.

You most definitely sound VERY personally invested in this one dog, given it's the only subject you've posted about on YT.

It's curious as to why you're putting Colorado as your location, when that's not where you're posting from...?

Sharon - if you post the dates of all her shots given to this point, I can help figure out what you need going forward. If the breeder gave ANY shots prior to 6 weeks, those are basically moot/useless at that age, btw....and an informed breeder no longer even gives shots earlier than 8wks old anymore.

And, might want to add reputable to the part I highlighted.

Lacy was born Aug 1st.
On Oct. 15th, she had Distemper Adenoviru Type 2 Paraifluenza-Parvovirus Vaccine, Dutamune Max 5

I got Lacy on Nov. 9th.
I took Lacy to the vet on Nov. 10th, and the vet said she was due for her LAST shots that day, even though I expressed doubt that it was correct. (As I have found out, she was wrong.)

On the vaccine record, it has the 2nd shots were supposed to be on Nov. 15th, and the 3rd on Dec. 15th.

The vet assistant said she can have her bordetella and rabies on Nov. 24th, but I am not sure that is correct???

Well, I m definitely going to get a new vet.
And I also want to do some more testing on Lacy.
What should I test for, besides Liver Shunt? And how do they test for that, a blood test?

when I got my two rescues because the Vet and I did not know their history he did a CBC/Chem Lab and said if anything came back abnormal we would go from there. I haven't read all the posts but what about tithers for certain vaccines?

On Nov 10th, she was 15wks old and given a 2nd set. So, using Dr. Dodd's schedule, which is least invasive....she is indeed okay on shots. And in fact, I highly commend your vet for NOT following the more commonly used more aggressive approach that is actually unneeded for the dog's immunity.

When she is 20 wks old at least, she can have her rabies. And then you'd do puppy boosters in 1 year.

Would work for an adult, but not in this puppy's case.

Bile acid testing is a blood test that is done following an overnight fasting period. Usually you fast overnight and drop off at vet in AM. A blood sample is done and then the pup is fed and two hours later another blood sample is done. This test shows how the liver is functioning.

Thank you so much for your help, Ann. I am confused, though. Are you saying the pup does not need three sets of shots? Sounds like that is what you are saying?

The vet said that Lacy was due for her THIRD set of shots the day I took her in, and she was incorrect about that. She was actually due for her 2nd set of shots five days later.

The vet assistant said Lacy could have her rabies and bordetella on Nov. 24th. She will be 16 weeks and 3 days then.

I just called my vet and asked if they gave 2 or 3 sets of puppy shots, and she said they give three. So, my vet was not following Dr. Dodd's schedule. For some reason, she thought Lacy needed her third set of shots when I was there. She was calculating how old lacy was, and NOT when she had her previous shots, even though I gave her the vaccination record. Because when I expressed my doubt about her needing one that day, she pointed out how old Lacy was, and not when her previous shots were given. This was a very young vet, and I have a feeling, she has not been trained properly. I have an appt with the manager on Monday to express my disappointment in the vet saying I could take Lacy out three days ago, when in fact, I can't take her out for another month or so. AND for telling me she was getting her third shot, when in fact, it was only her second.

Vets usually follow the AAHA guidelines.....

In terms of vaccines, a younger vet should know the guidelines really well. Some of the older vets still follow very old ones...

I only follow Dr. Jean Dodds schedule. I don't do boosters until they are about 5-6 years old after titers. Only do Rabies--only the minimal amount required by law.

Do full blood panel. If liver values aren't normal, then do bile acid.

You can have liver issues without liver enzymes showing it. It is actually more common than people realize. I found this out the hard way...I used to believe that there was no way they could have a shunt with normal enzymes. Then, there was my boy Teddy who had a congenital shunt that was not found until he had bladder stones...and I had had him for years with yearly labs done. Never any alterations at all. Fortunately for him I had taken him to a specialty hospital and the soft tissue surgeon saw the stones and felt they were urates and did an exploratory and found a shunt! They called me from the OR and asked if I wanted to repair..which of course I did. I was so stunned...and now know it is just sometimes that way. It really all depends on how much blood is being diverted..and how much is still going through the liver.

Yes, I'm saying she does not technically *need* 3 sets of shots to obtain proper immunity. That very last shot is taking place at 14-16wks, which will cover her properly. If you feel more comfortable, for some reason, giving 3 sets of shots - you can, of course. If it were me, I'd stick with the sets and follow Dodd's schedule.
