| Help! Not sure what to do! I haven't been on the site for a very long time (life got in the way!) Anyway, we have a very sweet 13 year old yorkie and here is the problem - we moved about a month and 1/2 ago and she has lost her sight as well as her hearing within the last 3 weeks, she also has congestive heart failure. We used to let her sleep with us but since she started having these problems she will either jump off our bed or simply get too close to the edge and fall off (while we are sleeping). She has also started wetting the bed, besides having "accidents" all over the house. We want her to be safe at night so we have started putting her in her kennel (which wasn't a problem in the past) but she seems to get really agitated in the kennel. She will whimper, growl and bark. I keep it close enough to the bed that I can put my fingers in and touch her but nothing seems to help. I don't want her to be stressed at night but I don't want her to get hurt jumping or falling off our bed or peeing in it, and I would really like to get a good nights sleep again but I don't know what to do to help her.

| You are at a point in your baby's life that is really tough on both her as well as you......any of us with these precious little seniors, know and understand exactly where you are coming from. I ended up buying a rail for my bed....actually two of them, that fit end to end, down the entire left hand side of the bed. This is out of the question for any of us with a sleeping partner!......not an issue with me!...... What you are experiencing is a very real issue and danger...that baby WILL eventually mistep and fall from your bed in the middle of the night....disastrous. Are you putting something with your smell, like a nightgown or robe, in with that little darling, so she knows you are close....and with her bed on the floor in her xpen at your bedside where you can drop your hand over the edge and she can know you are right there, she will eventually calm down and realize she has NOT been abandoned by you, just made safer. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Just going to throw this out there...but what if you had a little bench/side table next to the bed - the same height, where the kennel could be so that she was sleeping level with you...wonder if that would help her? I would also get this baby to the vet ASAP bc she may have a UTI/bladder infection which could be very painful for her. While there, I'd ask for something for night time anxiety too. It's really tough when these babies get old like this...things go wrong and it's hard on everyone. Wishing you all the best!

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Both ladies gave you some great advise. I like the baby rail idea, that would work if you pup had a favorite side he prefers. I would add putting a water proof liner under your bedding to protect your mattress. You may also think about putting a dog bed lined with water proof material in your bed for him to sleep in. That will not only keep him safe it keeps your bed from getting peed in and it provides a comfortable place for him to sleep and you know where he is at all times. Another thing to consider is a small baby basinets one that you can pull up right next to your bed. It has a water proof liner and the rail already build in. You may be able to find a used one at a garage sale or on FB on local garage sale groups. Good Luck, hoping you find a solution.

Senior Yorkie Talker | I know exactly how you feel, my Abby is now 16 and has no sight and very limited hearing, we have been in our home for 10 years so she knows it very well, and gets around very well, but when I had to start putting her in her bed at night insted of mine, it was very difficult, I also felt very bad not having her with me at night, I thought she would be lonely and sad, so I built a platform, with 3 high sides, open side to my bed, and I put her bed in it. It works very well, I can touch her and also my other Yorkie goes back and forth between my bed and Abby's, so Abby is not alone, Chloe often sleeps beside her and I think that helps too. It must be so hard for them when they can't do the things they are used to doing, I always feel so bad, but just keep trying different things, maybe some fuzzy toys, or putting a hot water bottle covered with a towel in her bed they like warm comfy things. They are such a huge part of our lives, and give us all thier love, and all the funny things they have done through all the years nothing is too much for them. |

| I would check with the vet to see what medication. Old help with the wetting at night. Have you thought about putting the night time crate right up beside you on the bed or night stand so you could talk to here at night. Might be kind of rough the first few nights it once she know you are there she might settle into it!

| Thank you all for the suggestions - I really appreciate them! There are some things I can try. Unfortunately side rails on my bed won't work - she actually jumps over my husband to get to the other side of him and I am afraid she would jump over the rails also. I haven't thought about talking to the vet about anxiety meds I will have to do that! She was tested for UTI etc. when we had her at the vet 2 weeks ago and we mentioned the accidents - the test was negative. I keep her kennel where I can reach it so I can let her lick my hand once in a while at night. We have thought about the bassinet idea and we are looking for a used one to see if that would work. I need to get her used to something so she sleeps at night because she will be staying at my parents (who love her like one of theirs) while we are in Hawaii in November! I love her so much and want her to be safe, comfortable and happy.
