| Newbie here!! Food question? Our yorkie is 5 months old and is doing great!! We are feeding her purina pro plan focus (what her breeder uses) and she's doing fine...I have also been feeding her a few pieces of better dry food (we got samples of orijen, fromm, taste of the wild, nutri source purevita grainfree, blackwood etc) as her treats (she doesn't know the difference). I'm thinking of switching her to one of these higher rated foods but I can't decide which one...there are so many to choose from!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Also, do you recommend giving her coconut oil? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated too!! |

| Hi and welcome to YT The food question is a big one Bella is a RC. girl(Royal Canin). and I give her a half of a Cesar in the morning just because she loves it and it gets something on her tummy quickly. Im not one to fall for all the ads on TV. I think there are alot of good foods out there and they dont have to be the the most $$$ ones. I have heard coconut oil is good and some use it but I havent yet. Would love to see some pics of your baby. |

YT 1000 Club Member | At 5 months old I would not switch her food. When she transitions to adult food I would then get what you want her to be on. If she is doing good on this food there is no point in changing it when she will have a food change coming up in a few months. Some vets recommend around 8-10 months switching them over to adult food. So, what you and your vet decide is the right time to switch her to an adult food I would then purchase the one you want her to be on and take 7-10 days to switch her over to it slowly. I have 6 month old puppies and I would not change their food until they are ready to go on adult food and then I will do it and put them on a better quality than what they are on (what they were on when I got them). Good luck!

YT 1000 Club Member | There is a thread that shows you how to post pictures. It was very helpful to me. They also have to be a certain size so you may have to resize them to make them small enough. I don't think the food you have them on is a bad food and I think it is good that you want to put them on something better when they switch to adult food. I am pretty much doing the same thing with my 6 month old puppies. There were on purina puppy chow when I got them at 10 weeks old and so I left them on it and they are thriving. I do plan to switch them to something better though when they switch to adult food in a few months.

Any of those samples you have are very nice foods. I feed pre-made frozen raw, but kibbles I like are Natures Logic (venison is my fave), Solid Gold Barking at the Moon or Wee Bits, Orijen/Acana, Natures Variety etc... And coconut oil is great for them, yes!

I agree about keeping baby on what she is used to and eating well, until she is 8-10 months old....I always just told my people to keep the pup on RC until a year old....then I always encouraged them to stay with RC, but if they wanted to get onto that merry-go-round of going thru dozens of dog foods, after a year old, trying this, trying that, then they could do so safely.....Switch gradually so their system tolerates the change in formula.....there are more pups messed up when owners jump onto this switching and swapping dog foods, then pup goes off everything and the games begin! More harm is done during this time with this event, than if they had been left on what they were getting initially! | |

| It is always a good idea to look into the quality of the food you are feeding. It is not a good idea to continually switch foods but if you find one you prefer over what you are feeding now a gradual switch is the best way to do it. Just slowly add the new food to what you are feeding now while gradually decreasing the old food and increasing the new over a period of a couple of weeks. There is a huge difference in the quality and the manufacturing process of various pet foods so some investigation is necessary. It is good you are concerned enough to ask the question. |

YT 3000 Club Member | when you do change foods, chester has been on solid gold in the past and has done great the grain free is not high protein, and currently is on acana which is a sister food to orjien and is not as high in protein, either one are good as well as othere. fromm, wellness and others as well |

| If your not happy with the food. You can change it. Just mix the other foods. And change slow. Just because they are use to it but u feel its bad. You still don't need to feed them it. Personally I would never feed anything from Purina. Nothing from China. My take others have different opinions. But what ever you do if you change the food tha you think is high quality .Nothing is going to happen. Unless the dog has an reaction to the food. But I've had dogs for 40 yrs. Never seen bad things happen from changing foods. When I get my Yorkies. I change the food in about a month. Why. I like different food then what my breeder feeds. My Yorkies are healthy. I've had Yorkies long enough to know. But that being said all dogs are different and you just need to watch your dog while you change. Alot of foods are all life stages also. |
