| Potty Pad And Outdoor Training? Hello, We just adopted a 7 month old Yorkie mix who is not completely potty trained and wondered if . . . Can you potty train for both outdoor and potty pads for when weather is to bad to go outdoors? If so, should I do both at the same time or one before the other? Thanks to any help/suggestions offered. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on the new addition! You can have piddle pads and train to go primarily outdoors, but I would recommend not trying to have the piddle pads appear only when the weather is bad. The pads would always have to be available if you choose to use them, otherwise you risk confusing the dog. One of my friends had a Yorkie who was outdoor trained and would use the piddle pads in the garage during bad weather. I would say this is unusual and challenge to be 100% successful. Probably worked because she was still going outside of the home, into the garage. My boys are pad and outdoor trained. They always have the pad available but prefer to go outdoors, especially to poop. They do understand that the pad is only in their home, not other people's homes or public places.

| You can train for both but it's a bit harder as you'll confuse the dog. I would recommend to train to go outside only. That's what I did for my 2 fur babies. My friend trained his dog to use the pad at night only and he always leaves the pad out in the same place (kitchen). G'luck as potty training Yorkies can be a tough task especially if they're under 8 months old. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | We pad trained ours mainly, though ours also like to go outside. Unforch, I would never ever pad train a dog again...I think it confuses them and they tend to have a lot of accidents. Of course, maybe I didn't train well enough etiher...? I wish I was like Kristin, and was able to train them better...her situation, to me, is ideal!!!

| Zeus goes on potty pads and never has accidents. We found this easier since we both work. I didn't want the poor thing holding it for long periods. The funny thing is we put two small pee pads down side by side when he was a tiny puppy, so he would have plenty of room to go. Now he poops on one and pees on the other and will not go the other way around. If there are not two, he will let you know by circling the one. Funny! He will go outside as well, but it is so hot down here, he doesn't go outside very much and certainly not for long periods. He's panting within a minute. He's like me -- I think we actually belong in Alaska. I hate the heat, too. We are also afraid of him being dragged off by an animal -- we are surrounded at my house. Owls, snakes, huge raccoons, huge armadillos, etc. |

| Thanks so much for the reply. We were thinking to put the pads right outside the back door, covered porch area, where she normally goes outside to go. So maybe that will work. |

| That should work! It's still outside, so there shouldn't be a whole lot of confusion.

| One more note: be sure to praise her when she goes potty in the right place, either on the grass or the pad. My boys are 6 and almost 7 and we still praise like lunatics. The doggies are in it for the kibble reward they receive, but they also enjoy the praise on our walks.

YT 1000 Club Member | I have been training my puppies using both. I take them out as much as possible, but when they are inside there are pads available to them and they are doing quite well with it. It will be handy when the weather is bad if I don't have to take 4 dogs outside to potty. The older 2 are only outdoor trained so I have to take them out, but if the puppies can go inside, it would be so much nicer. They are doing well at both. Yesterday Rowan had 1 poop accident on the vinyl floor in the kitchen. He successfully peed and pooped (twice on the poop) on the pee pads and then went outside several times. I call that a good day! I praise him when he potties on the pee pads and when he goes outside.

| My Ziva is trained to do both- garage and outside- because she refuses to go out in the dark or rain. She was potty pad trained inside then I moved the pad to the garage. Ziva started to potty outside in the daytime when we got Abby who only goes outside, day or night. |

| I have a 1 yearly yorkie and she is primarily pad trained, however we live in an apartment that isn't very spacious so sometimes its a hassle to keep the smell down although we change pad often. She would poop outside sometimes but now she just views walks as "play time" |

| My experience with pad training is...as puppies they were confined to a small area, pee pad at one end, bed at another end, food between the two. When I came home from work the puppy had free roam of 3 rooms of the house, doors closed to bedrooms and bathroom. When the puppy pooped or peed some where other then the pee pad I picked up the poo, put it on the pad, got the puppy placed her on the pad and told her, "poo poo on the pad" when she peed I took the pad, absorbed the pee from the floor, put the pad back where it belonged, got the puppy placed her on the pad with the pee and told her "pee pee on the pad. 4 yorkies through out a period of 12 years were trained this way, when they were 5 months old they were 100% pad trained, then I started to house break them , feed same time every day, walked in the morning (7:30AM) and when I came home from work (4:30) everyday, by 7 mos old they were 100% house broken.
