Default Please help--I can't get him brushed!

He won't stop squirming. I have tried three brushes and combs. I use spray for the knots but i just can't do it. I also have a really hard time cleaning his eyes. Snickers is 14 weeks. How do you get them used to grooming.

With mine he was a bit squirmy at first but I would take a treat and and break it into tiny pieces, and would let him see the brush, say good boy, and do a couple brush strokes, then give him a tiny piece of treat and say good boy again. I would do this twice a day except for later in the evening on the second brushing I would just say good boy, and give him no treat. After a few days he didnt mind the brushing. He is now 6 months old and he runs to me and lays on his back when he sees me get the brush. And when he is completly done then I give him a treat. Hope this helps I am sure others will also have suggestions!

Skingstone ---I'll bet my dog is worse than yours. From the get-go, he wiggled, squirmed, whinned, and kept turning around trying to bite me whenever I tried to brush or comb him.

If I turn the comb upside down- and just glide it over him (you know he's not even being combed) - he will carry on like I'm trying to kill him.

There are a couple things I do.

The best thing I read here on YT was someone who put some cheese on a saucer and put it in the microwave. She heated it just long enough that it melted and when it cooled off - it was was almost "hard" on the dish. This really kept my puppy licking for almost ten minutes and I was able to get a lot done....for the first time.

Second - I have a comb on the sofa, and I comb a little area whenever he gets near me. I do this while he's running around and playing. I think he's learning that a comb or brush isn't going to kill him.

Whatever - he is really terrible. I am so thankful that he doesn't matt...and for now - I'm keeping him short.

I do know, however, that these little guys do need to learn to stand still and be groomed. It's just part of training and growing up.

If I had someone here with me, I'd just have them hold his head (against his will - of course) and comb or brush him out gently and carefully - and then give him a treat and let him go -- done deal! I know I'm not hurting him.

Good luck! Carol Jean

I'm having the same problem with little Bailey. He is also 14 weeks old and I "just" tried to brush him with my boyfriend holding him and ohhh....how he squirmed and wimpered and I just had to stop. I got him a treat but he grabbed it and took off. I think I'm going to try the cheese thing.

Yes I was getting ready to post the cheese in the plate thng!!!! It was me and it works great for Hayley and I!!! Also ya might want to try it after he goes to sleep. I always put Hayley to sleep at nite in my lap and hold her for some time before putting her in her bed and once she is asleep I can brush her, trim around her eyes, trim her nails and just about anything so ya might want to try that too....good luck

Me again - Murphy hasn't had a bath for two weeks -so, I gave him one tonight.

The bath part goes reasonably well - but trying to dry him is something else. He goes nuts - hates it - bites me, the towel, and everything.

After that - I thought I'd try AGAIN to brush or comb him. He became his usual monster from hell self. He was struggling, jumping around, fighting, and really biting me hard. This is totally unreal. I have never had a dog like this. You would think I was killing him.

I want to make sure that you know that Murphy is 4 1/2 months old, a quiet, docile little Yorkie. He doesn't bark. He's sweet, friendly, and loves and is nice to everyone. Playful - never aggressive. Never a problem at all!!!!

So - where does this monster come from??

Anyway - I did the cheese thing and got a little grooming done. He licked on the cheese busily for 5 minutes or more, but kept an eye on me while I gently combed his back and the top part of his legs. He has no tangles or matts over this area at all - so there was no pulling or hurting in any way. Still, if it weren't for the cheese, he'd be growling and biting me to death.

Tomorrow night - I am going to concentrate a little more on his legs. They really aren't matted or tangled, but will require a little more combing. I'll try not to hurt him at all -- but he doesn't even need to be hurt to go bonkers crazy.

What a dog! I think any groomer would give up with him and call me to come get him. No charge - just take him home and don't bring him back!!!!!

I know I have the worst dog - as far as combing or brushing goes. A dog couldn't be worse.

He is bad bad bad - I should have named him Leroy Brown - right!

The thing is -- he has to be groomed and combed and brushed occasionally. I'm bigger than him - I am going to win!

As soon as this war session was over - he was back to his playful, friendly little self. He holds no grudge - at least I'm thankful for that.

Carol Jean

Peawee's groomer told me to hold them under the chin daily and that gets them use to getting groomed.

Ahia used to be bad about brushing when she first came to us. (8 wks) I was insistant. she loves being brushed now. when i am brushing Buckeye she will jump up, get in my way, take her hand (paw) and move the brush towards her. she loves it. I didn't think I would ever get her used to being brushed but as time went on she learned it wasn't all that bad.
Also when her puppies were new born I started right away brushing to get them used to it along with running my finger along the gums to help with the teeth brushing when that was needed. (I hope it helped with the new owners)

I'll try anything and everything.

I sure hope my dog eventually gets used to being brushed. Wouldn't that be wonderful!

Either way - he is going to be groomed and brushed occasionally - Tonight is the first time I ever told him that he was a "bad bad boy." Man - did he bite me hard. It hurt! Those little baby teeth are very sharp and can do a lot of damage.

I'll keep trying - and you'll just have to believe me - I am as gentle as I can possibly be with him.

Grooming my dog may require prayers from all of you. Carol Jean

Don't rush them ... take it slow and easy. Just hold him and pet him, then take a few swipes with a brush. Make sure you brush an area which isn't too matted so that the brushing goes pretty easily at first. Over time you'll be able to brush him and he'll really enjoy it. Ours now beg to be next.

We tried using treats for a bit but discovered they wouldn't sit still without it ... expecting it every time. So we stopped using the treats and just used loving as a treat.

I personally see nothing wrong with giving treats for behaving.
