To Potential Backyard Breeders I know we all love our little Yorkies to bits and pieces. I rescued a little Yorkie who was the product of a BYB and my poor little girl is riddled with health issues, because the moron decided that his/her dog was so cute, that they would make money off breeding her. Well, thats actually cruel and unjust to the helpless litter and probably the mother too. My girl is 7 months old and has already had two major surgeries...shes having another liver panel done on Monday because she may have LS. My heart breaks just knowing what shes gone through already. She is spunky and has a love of life and will to thrive so we will be ok. I'm so sad for the other puppies coming from that careless "breeder" said with the utmost contempt and sarcasm. I'm pretty sure most people wont be prepared to spend what I have on this little rescue so far..and still counting. Because of this site, and seeing people ask where can you get a Yorkie for $200 or $300...you get the idea, I started to look at Yorkie Rescue sites all over the country. I think most people would be literally shocked to see just how many Yorkies are out there waiting to be rescued!! There are so many it makes me want to open a House to just rescue all these little babies, but I KNOW its beyond my knowledge base. I know the majority of us really take personal responsibility for our pets and do the best we can to ensure they are healthy, and happy. But when I look at those websites and see the beautiful little babies eyes and the little head tilt that so many Yorkies have, I just dont understand how you stop loving your little pet. Did it get too big? too many medical issues? YOU can't train him/her? So just dump at the shelter..I bet those very same people are already looking for a "better" puppy the same day. Oh yeah..BYB, you do so much good. I read somewhere on this site, that someone wants to breed her dog, because its the dogs right to be a mother?!! I swear to God, I literally wanted to scream. I didnt even comment on that thread because I was furious at the negligence involved. If you DO love this breed, then leave it to the experts to do the breeding the proper way. There is so much more involved then, "well the mommy and daddy are so pretty, they'll make pretty babies". CLUELESS. There just arent enough people out there that can adopt all the neglected and abused dogs that already exist. I know this will probably not even make a dent in the minds of the people I wish would think about what they are doing. But, I just have to say it. Maybe it will make someone think twice about exactly what they are doing. And with that I'm off to volunteer at a Pet Adoption Day today...Not one single "mutt" amongst the dogs looking for families.

Great post for those that want to breed their yorkies and not have the knowledge. Years ago we bought our dear little Keally and thought this lady was a good breeder. Well it turned out she had genetic ibd all her life. We were devastated and the vet bills were crazy but we loved her so much. She also had separation anxiety issues because the breeder let her go at six weeks and we were too stupid to read up about this stuff.Anyways we had her for 12 1/2 years and were so devastated to have to say goodbye. This breeder still breeds today and still has some genetic ibd in her line. I wished people would understand about breeding yorkies and other breeds. Six months later we did find a wonderful breeder and bought a healthy happy puppy. Her name is Kinder and time flies she is five years old. I hope people read your post and mine and go to a reputable breeder who cares about the yorkie breed. Susan

| Thank you for rescuing your baby. I feel the same. I'm just flabbergasted at people who think that way about breeding their dog. It's the mindset of most people today that they want what they want to do. And they want to do it now. They don't want to take the long and right way to do things. They want it now and fast. At least if you're going to be a byb, admit it you are doing it for money or whatever. Don't try and hide behind whatever "righteous" reason you think you have. Unfortunately, no one is going to admit that they are a byb.

I was pretty upset when I wrote the above this morning. Its too long a story to say everything (again) but, I ended up having to take Sunni to the vet yesterday. I feel so awful because I've gone back to basics potty training her and she is very responsive and so badly wants to do the right thing, but she just can't hold it. I saw her yesterday actually unable to hold it in as she was trying to get to the pad by the door. Right then and there I knew I was wrong and she wasn't being contrary, poor little trouper. I scooped her up and went right to the Vet. They got a sample because she conveniently peed while we were there and she was on the scale...anyway, there is no blood in her urine, and she's on a stronger anti-biotic but she's getting another BAC done Monday morning because the vet thinks she does have a Liver Shunt. I feel so helpless with this poor little sweetheart. She never lets on she isnt feeling well...so cheerful, but just riddled with issues directly related to her breeding. I knew what I was getting into but I prayed so hard and still do that I can really help her. I'm upset. I've read up on LS now and I just can't stand thinking of her having a third surgery before she is 1 yr old...I am in love with this little girl and I will be crushed if anything bad happens to her this young. Ugh, I''m babbling but, I am really very upset. It feels like she and I are really fighting an uphill battle, just to have a happy little life.

Thanks for the kind responses. Opium, I can't even go to Craigslist (for real) I get too riled up to read thru..its bad enough going to the Rescue Me sites checking on Yorkies...thousands are abandoned. Some even admit, they just had a new baby and now after 8 yrs the dog is too much work......moving, just cant transport dog to new location..didn't realize how expensive it is to own a Yorkie..the excuses are a mile long. So many twits think of this little ones as toys, I think. The dont love the dogs..the love the idea of the dogs, if that makes sense. Oh well, when I win the huge Lottery, I'll open a Yorkie Sanctuary..maybe expand it to a toy breed sanctuary...a girl can dream
