| Hi all, new user (former lurker) Hi, folks! I decided to register today because my lil girl is 64 days pregnant and I'm a little jittery. Once I write this intro post, I'm going to post questions once I find the proper forum! I have two yorkies-- Chewie, my little girl, is 4. She's the one who's about to give birth. We also have a male-- the father of the puppies-- who is one. His name is Wagnar, though he seems to prefer when I call him "little man." I'm proud of him this week because he got fixed on Monday, and he's been such a little trooper about it. We decided we wanted to let the two of them have a single litter together (we wanted them to preserve their bloodline, and I just felt it was fair before fixing them both). I'm hoping they only have one or two pups-- I might just keep both. I've landed on this site so many times Googling my late night worries (ear mites, an ear infection, is it okay that Chewie just ate strawberries while I was in the other room?). Everyone here seems friendly and knowledgable. I hope I can add to that somehow, though my expertise lies mostly in other areas. Good to meet all of you! -Phill |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Hi welcome to Yorkietalk, I'm no breeder, but I've read that a first pregnancy at the age of 4 can cause problems. Has your little girl been pregnant before? Are you doing vet checks? Have you gotten an x-ray yet? Do you know how to whelp a litter of puppies? I don't want to scare you, but I would be scared to death. Yorkies often need help to deliver their pups. The strawberry is okay as long as they weren't sweetened with certain artificial sweeteners. Best of luck!

| That is pretty old for you to be breeding her.

| Wow, I didn't realize 4 was old. I'd been told that for a single litter, 3-4 was optimal (no later than 5). I hope we're not in for troubles on that front. Thanks for the info. I'm debating taking her to the vet tomorrow (our vet is an hour drive, so I hate to make her sit in the car for two hours so close to her due date if it's not a necessity). Responses are worrying me a touch, though. -Phill |

She seems distress free so far, but I'm wondering if there's a sign I wouldn't normally read. She's acting like she usually does, other than hanging out in the whelping box when she's not with me or my mother. We have all the supplies on hand. We had a litter of Shih-tzus a few years ago, so we're hoping that was good prep. The mother then wasn't quite as small as Chewie, but close, and we did have to assist with one pup. My big fear-- other than "why is nothing happening"-- is that we'll have to rush her out for a c-section. I think we have everything else under control. It just seems like it's been too long, and that's making me paranoid. I'm sure all of you can relate. I get unnerved when she has an ear infection. I'm so overprotective. | |

| If you have never whelped a litter before, and you are an hour from your vet, and you have not at least measured pelvic ring/head ratio on xray to be sure your momma can even pass the pups, if you have no supplies like bedding, a whelping box for momma and the babies, source of heat, feeding formulas for possibility of orphaned babies or failure to thrive babies.....you need help IMMEDIATELY.....find SOMEONE that is knowledgable about birthing babies......you may have 24 - 48 hours to learn all you need to know about what is about to become your reality! |
