Senior Yorkie Talker | how old is she? Hi everyone... I have a question about my yorkie baby's breeder... I purchased my baby girl when she was 8 weeks old which I now know is a bad sign about the breeder. I went to the breeders home when my toodles was 1 week old and choose her out of the litter in person. I never saw the mom or dad other than in pictures. The breeder stated the mom was 4 lbs and the dad 3lbs. My baby is supposedly 13 weeks and is 4.14 lbs already. I don't care if she is bigger, I truly dont, but the thing is, the breeder keeps making excuses about her papers. I was told the papers would be sent to me within 2 weeks of taking my baby home. I asked the breeder about the papers and was told they sent them back to her with the wrong birth date!!!??!! I think my baby is older than what she claims and is not from the litter I choose. She had another litter that was several weeks older when I went to her home to see my toodles. I know she had one female left the from the older litter when I picked Toodles up. I think I have that female. I told her about the weight and changes in toodles that seem to be too soon for her age, she did tell me that if she were to keep one of the pups that it would be the one I choose. I had doubts about the weekly pics (actually every 4 days) being the same pup. One week the pup looked lighter next week so much darker, both ears standing and then 4 days later both down. The puppies faces and coats looked so different... how can I tell if my baby is older than 13 weeks? Do you think the papers truly came in with the wrong birth date?

| I'm not an expert and I adopted my girl from a bad situation. But, just from reading these boards constantly that sure does seem fishy to me. Even just getting the puppy pictures wrong...did you question her as the pictures were coming? Is she a backyard breeder? Kind of sounds like it. Since she said she would have kept the one you picked out, it does seem like she made a switch, to me. My little girl is 5 months old and weighs 10 lbs, lol. At this rate she's going to be a moose! I would definitely be troubled about the papers not arriving. I didn't pay for a purebred. I have no true history of my baby, but she's a living angel. I wouldn't trade her for the world. I hope it all works out for you. I'm sure that some of the legitimate breeders and knowlegable Yorkie experts will offer you some useful suggestions. Good luck. |

| Do you still have the pics? Maybe some of the more experienced people (not me) on this forum can see them and advise you.

| wow that is a tuff one, what type of registry did she say she would give you papers from, if it's not AKC all the others are sort of a joke and hold no real value. have you asked your vet if he could tell the age of the puppy, often they can tell by the teeth but if it would only be two weeks that might be hard for the vet to determine. To make it easier for you to post the photos from birth on, just make an album and post it on your profile, this way you would not have to spend a lot of time resizing each picture. There are many breeders on here and they would be your best shot in helping you determine if your the pup was not the same as the one week old you choose Puppy's hair can change quickly and I have seen ears up and then later down so it is really hard to say. But I will say your breeder sounds fishy. In actuality it would be good if your girl was older, but still that meant your were cheated. If your pup is already over 4 lbs at 13 or 15 weeks that is rather large, she could grow to well over 10Lbs, I am not sure what you paid, or if she made any promises but if you were looking for that standard size yorkie you might eventually be very disappointed. I find it odd that you did not get to see the mom and dad, at that age she was most likely with the mom at least, any decent breeder would show you the mom.

It is often hard to tell with photos. I have photos I took of ZoE myself when she was a very young puppy, and to look at them you wouldnt think she was the same dog. Did your breeder give you any idea how big she expected your pup to be? You mentioned that the breeder said your pup would have been the one she'd keep. My ZoE was the puppy from the litter her breeder was keeping. She picked her (among whatever other reasons breeders do) because she knew she 'd have silky hair, and she knew she was going to be bigger. Her breeder thought she'd be 6-7 lbs, and unlike pet owners, breeders often seem to want a good sized healthy yorkie. In fact, upon knowing that my last yorkie was five pounds on the nose, the breeder specifically said she was expecting Zo to be slightly bigger than that, between 6-7lbs, and asked, was I ok with that? Well, ZoE topped her expectations and is over ten lbs now. When her breeder saw her when she was around a year old, she was notably shocked by her size. I've grown to love ZoE's size. She's strong and has been incredibly healthy. She'll be five years old this year.

| Things like this happen when you go with bad breeders. If you looked at the pups at a week old they should have been with there mother so how you didn't get to see her is weird. At this point there is not much you can do but love your pup and make sure to get pet insurence that covers genetic issues.

YT 1000 Club Member | Do you trust your breeder? Based on this thread I'd say not. My breeder wanted to keep Laveau for her breeding program, but I'd already placed a deposit on her. My breeder kept her word since that means more to her than adding another female to her breeding program. Puppies do change a lot during their first few weeks and the changes continue over months. My concern is when you stated the colors changed as well as coat texture. I've never seen a young yorkie puppy change colors within the time frame you've given. Roots change(my pup had white roots at 8 weeks and looks a bit bald now)so is that what you mean about color changing? Ears can go up/down in regards to teething, stress, low calcium, etc. As far as papers, that depends on the breeder. With all of my dogs I received registration papers at the time of purchase. The fact that this breeder makes excuses because she had the wrong birthdate seems a bit suspicious. Especially since it's been over a month since you've purchased her. It shouldn't take her a month to send in the corrected registration packet and to notify you that your papers are ready for pickup. |
