Default He's driving me nuts! :(

We brought my pup home about a month ago. He was 2 1/2 to 3 months old when we got him, and now he's going on 4 months. When we first got him, he didn't bark hardly ever, just whined when he had to go potty. He loved being brushed and was the sweetest damn thing. Now he's just being crazy. He barks and barks and barks. I try to ignore him to let him know that barking doesn't get him what he wants, but it doesn't stop him. He also bites, he bites hands, he bites whatever he can get his mouth on. He hates being brushed and tries to bite the brush and bite my hand and he really hurts!

I don't know what to do. I'm at a loss. Help!

Default barking

Sounds like something has upset him big time. Have thrown away any toys or maybe he has a toothache. Just keep giving him love.

I got 2 puppies that are now 5 months old. They are teething like babies do. When they get adult teeth, chewing should lessen. I bought my babies chew sticks. They live chewing on them and I give them treats when they do o encourage this behavior. I also watch them, tell them no in a nice calm voice when they chew on stuff i don't want chewed and will pull them away and give then a chew toy. I repeat when they go back to chewing on my stuff and only treat when they chew what I want. They are improving daily.
As for the biting, They both still play bite me. I tell them no and never play back. When they don't listen, and I want to be critical about this, but when they don't stop, I lightly, very, Very, VERY lightly tap them on the bottom. If it stings you even a little. Its to hard. All I want them to know is it hurts me and needs to stop. They have stopped most of the time but do stop when I say no bite. Very soft tap, seriously. To hard will make the baby distrust and fear you, and you don't want that.
As for brushing, I bought two brushes. One to attack, one to Brush. You babies hair may have be matted underneath. When the hair switches from puppy to adult, its common for it to mat up. This hurts them when brushed and might be why you baby isn't looking being brushed. Get them groomed with shorter hair and try brushing with a soft brush as the new hair grows in. Hopefully he loves it again.
This is stuff I've been experiencing, and have figured out since my babies are only a month older. ☺
Hope this helps.

Biting and barking he is trying to establish his power. Canned air will make him quit. they are scared of it. But don't do it often only when hes really bad and your at witts end. The brushing is always a battle. IME the first year can be a challenge. Not all dogs are the same. Moki was easily trained. But Winnie is a Witch. But never quit they will come

When they are first getting used to you they are shy and nervous, this is the 'honeymoon' period when they seem to be on their best behavior, then when they are comfy their true terrier comes out!
Don't worry, your puppy is just being a puppy, he is going to push your buttons and try and see where the rules lie. Get him lots of chew toys, he will be teething for awhile. Make a loud 'ouch' when he bites hands or fingers and stop playing for a moment, redirect with a toy and praise him for bitting that. As for the barking there are lots of things to try, when mine was younger it was mostly just an outlet for energy, I started exercising her more and it helped. Basic obedience class also worked wonders, as soon as possible sign him up for puppy kindergarten. Good luck!

Teach your dog to SPEAK or bark on command. When the dog does this, give a treat. Then, when they have mastered SPEAK, teach QUIET. So, command the dog to SPEAK and then immediately say QUIET and give the dog a treat for not barking.

My Teddy was a crazy barker and I mean he would bark at the thermostat clicking, leaves blowing, people outside, etc. He doesn't do this anymore because he knows that when he is commanded to be QUIET, he will be rewarded with a treat which is much more rewarding than the bark. I have never had to scare the bark out of him. He listens to commands out of reward and respect. It did take about a year, though. Patience is key!

Good luck!

I'm convinced that they are born so cute adorable, cuddly and sweet as baby puppies..lol, so we fall madly in love with them. As someone said before, the "honeymoon" period. My puppy went thru the same transformation as yours, but as was also mentioned, patience and training have been the key for us. At first Sunni, loved being brushed, but then during the fiercest period of teething (nipping etc) she was a crazy wild pup. Who knew something so small could wiggle and twist that little body in so many ways?! She was always trying to get the comb out of my hand…so I just got another comb. The fake out comb, lol. I'd start with one, she'd battle for it. I'd give it to her and get the other one. But I never stopped until I had finished combing her completely. She gave up the fight eventually and now enjoys it again. I never heard of blowing air at them. But it totally explains Sunni's reaction to the blow dryer! She loves it when I'm drying her back and tummy, but if she's facing it, she goes nuts trying to bite….Air!!! Thats taken some time, but I would rather nudge her thru the process myself, before she begins seeing a groomer regularly. She's just about 5 months now, and has gone thru quite a few growth/maturity changes. Patience and time and plenty of exercise, games and training seems to be key for us.

I can hear that you are at the end of your rope take a deep breath : ) Now the biting what would a litter mate do if there brother was biting to hard He would yelp high pitch bark and his brother would be startled and stop biting and then Mom would come and in her way would say no biting so you can repeat that be yelping loud enough to startle and the say no biting and redirect to a chew toy.

Barking we used a water bottle. I just cant do barking so we got on to that one right away. I use the stream setting not the mist. When the barking started and there was no good reason for it ( dogs do barks some and need to ) I would say Bella no barking and if she kept going I would get the water bottle and give one good shot NOT right in her face and if she kept barking I would squirt a few time rapidly and say no barking till I got her attention. Two years in if she gets in to a barking fit for no good reason all I have to do is show her the bottle.

Hope that helps if not there are lots of good Ideas for others Let us know how it goes.

You might consider getting the Bark Genie from First Alert. It emits a sound that we can not hear but they do. Stopped my maltese from barking and guarding the door after the first time. Now all I have to do is show it to him and he stops. It has worked for many of us. Money back guarantee.

I tried the yelping, even growling. This worked at first but the alpha didn't care after a couple of days. I only
Had to tap her on her butt few times and say no bite and she stops now when I say no bite. I know it didn't hurt her, it was just the shock that got her attention. Try everything you can before you try this, is just what I finally did to get her to stop. Was shocked when i yelled And she continued, she wanted to be boss and I don't let her. Even on walks, she pulls on the leash, i pull back and say no. She is already better. Also teach them ticks, and I bought sisters, so they wear each other out too. I LOVE my babies 😍

Mine aren't bakers. When they barked, I barked back And said good girl speak. I think this is why. I took the dominance out of it early.

Default Play biting

Right now I'm using a rolled up newspaper and slap the floor or something other than my 11 week old baby. Sometimes play time gets out of control. We will play with toys after a while he goes crazy with me. Nipping any body part that's closest. He will stop, for awhile, when I slap the paper. Wears me out all day, but we love um.

The only thing that quiets Toby when he barks is a mesh muzzle. He can still eat drink and all that through it. He can still bark but it's a muted bark. I hate using it but I think my neighbors were plotting to lynch me and possibly him if I hadnt

Cherie, How does the Bark Genie work? My Shih Tzu does sit at the window and bark at anything that moves..from leaves to squirrels to rain and snow, lol. God help delivery people, lol. I have to put him in the xpen if the doorbell rings. He's 10 and not feeling well, so I wouldn't want anything to shock him, but I think he would be calmer if he wasn't barking at the slightest noise. I actually leave the tv on 24/7 just to help mute outside noises for him.
