| Does a yorkie's hair get thicker? I am new to the Yorkie World. I have two new yorkies. My little boy, Duncan, is 4 months old (I got him at 10 weeks) and the younger one, a little girl named Little Miss Elliot, is 2 months old (I have had her for 6 days). I have a question about hair thickness. Duncan's hair on top is very thin, almost see through in fact. There is barely enough to get it in a topknot. Does their hair get thicker as they get older, like humans hair? It doesn't seem to be growing very quickly either. Of course, he is a teapot <g> so his hair has to cover a large body. At 16 weeks, he is 8 lbs., 11 oz. and is as big as my dachshund. I never knew they got this big but he is adorable and I love him so much. I am wondering how big he is going to be when he is an adult. When do they stop growing anyway? Thanks for the answers to my questions. I am really enjoying this forum and the love I have and get from my yorkies I feel like a brand new mother all over again! |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Thickness of hair depends on the type of hair your little one has. There are three different types and of course they all grow at different rates and thicknesses. I came across this site that might help you understand better. Yorkie Coat and Coloring

| Thank you for this. Moxie also has very thin head hair, which I attributed to not being properly nourished and cared previously, but perhaps it's just genetics. |

| Puppy hair is very different than the adult coat. Your babies' coats should get fuller with age. It usually gets much easier to care for as the pup ages. Generally silky hair is finer than cotton coated Yorkies, and it's easier to maintain because it doesn't mat as much. My little girl has a silk coat, but her hair is very thick. I need to comb it in layers to get through all of the hair on her head. I love Yorkies of all sizes and coats.

| Tibbe has definitely gotten a much thicker coat with age. He's a virtual hairball, who needs cutting frequently to keep him from getting masses of coat, especially around his neck ruff and body hair and his mustache. He's not got a silky coat but it's not really cottony either, though it tends to curl a bit; and while he's got gobs of it, thankfully, he never, ever mats.

| I believe coat thickness does depend on genetics/coat type. Max has a silk coat and his head hair has grown progressively thicker with age. It's almost to the point where I worry about the weight on his head. Teddy's coat is also silky, but he has far less hair everywhere.
