| Getting very frustrated with my Gizmo - HELP! Gizmo is 15 months and has started peeing in my bedroom. He used to mark when he was younger while he was being potty trained and all was well after I thoroughly cleaned my rug. Things have been good, relatively speaking. He still will miss the pee pad when it's clean. He will go next to it but far enough away that you know he wasn't even trying. He started sleeping with me about four months ago and did very well. He would jump down and go to the restroom with no problem. Then all of a sudden this week he is peeing in my bedroom. If anyone has any suggestions or reasoning I would really appreciate hearing them. For now I'm going to start crating him again at night. I know he is going to hate it and it going to break my heart. I just don't know what else to do. Thanks for your feedback. |

| How far does he have to travel from your bedroom to the pad? Are there stairs?

| Yes, he was neutered at six months. The bathroom is right next to my bedroom. I don't have stairs by I have a big chair next to my bed that he jumps on to get on my bed. |

| I've thought of putting a pee pad down in my room, but since he doesn't always go on the pee pad I thought that would not be a good idea. |

Be sure to praise and reward for when he gets it right. My boys are 5 and 6 and we still praise profusely for using the pad. They also know how to milk it for extra kibble rewards.

| We give him treats every time he goes on the pad. He has a quick little strut that he does when he comes out of the bathroom and he goes straight to the kitchen for his treat. We say what did you do and walk back to the bathroom. When we see it we clap and say what a good boy. He walks so proudly back to the kitchen. That's what's so frustrating! |

| I have a pee pad in my bedroom so if Zoey needs to go during the night she doesn't have to make a trip downstairs. This has always worked for us.

| Teddy is the same age and has started marking and we have found an accident upstairs (his pee pads are downstairs) so we've started to crate him at night in our bedroom. This has the added benefit of him not feeling like he has to patrol and guard since he was barking all night, too. If he's peeing in your room in the day, I'd suggest not letting him have free access to your room. Maybe have something downstairs for him in the day or ask him when he needs to go so you can take him. I can't think of any other way around it at the minute. If I do, I'll come back! |

He doesn't pee in my room during the day, just started at night last week. We don't have stairs and he will run to the bathroom when he's playing during the day. He even takes whatever toy he's playing with when he goes.

| Well, the only answer is to restrict access at night. I have no idea why he does what he does at night but, if it's the only time, it seems he has his reasons...lol I think a crate or x-pen, like some have suggested, might be the answer. |

| I started crating him since Friday. I thought for sure it was going to be a long night since he's been sleeping with me for months. I'm happy to say he just does a little tiny whimper about 4 -5 times then he's out. He does whimper when he has to go around 5 and after that I let him sleep with until I wake up at 6 or 6:30. Do you think I should just put him back in his crate until I'm up for the day? |

I leave Teddy in his crate from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. at the longest stretch. 6 a.m. is when I wake up for the day. Sometimes, he digs a little and scratches his ear which lets me know he needs to pee in the middle of the night. So, I just take him to pee and he goes straight back to his crate and sleeps again until 6 a.m. I'm glad he's doing well in the crate. Sometimes, dogs just feel safer when they are in smaller spaces and it alleviates a lot of problems! Well, that has been my experience anyway. The rest of the day, Teddy is under constant supervision or tethered to me, due to marking, but that is a separate issue to yours!
