| At what age did most of your females go into heat? Trinket is 6 1/2 months old as of this past Thursday and she smells a bit like blood so even though I haven't seen any I am assuming she is in heat. When did your females go into heat. I want to wait until her growth plates close up before spaying which I am assuming is around a year old? I have male dogs but all are neutered and I do not have them around other dogs often so I am not worried about her getting pregnant. I do want to make sure I am making the right decision waiting to spay her though but also worry about mastitis and pyometra, etc... If waiting. Would love your opinions. She is still 2.4 lbs. I am not really worried about size as my tiny chihuahua was 2 lbs when she was spayed after she had her first season and a false pregnancy at 1 yr. her first season was 11 1/2 months. She is much smaller than trinket, I am blessed to have a great vet that is really good when it comes to small animal procedures. |

| Kyra was 6 months. We let her under the advise of our vet and also many here because she is a tiny who didn't reach 3lbs until she was a year old. We were waiting for her growth plates to close before spaying her.

| Even if there spayed there growth plates will still close I believe Jodi posted an article on it. I got Callie spayed around 9 months and she had not come into heat yet. I would maybe as the vet if she is in heat for sure just incase she dosent have something else going on.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I have had a female go into heat at 7mths old and one at 9 months old. Growth plates on small breed dogs can close as early as 7-8 months old. The last growth plate to close is the tibial plateau. A lateral view of the knee joint confirms if this growth plate has closed. Most vets like to spay at 6mths old prior to a first heat. Pyrometra is very rare in a young dog, as is mastitis or breast cancer.

| Uni didn't get her first heat until about 13 months. I was starting to worry what was wrong with her. I didn't get her spayed until 3years old but that is another story. I think around 8 months is ideal for spay since most of the baby teeth that would have come out on their own would have by then. Then the ones that won't come out can be taken out at spay. If there are many baby teeth when spayed too young, some vets will either leave them in and say they will come out on their own (and if they don't will result in double rows of teeth or very crooked teeth), or will take out all the baby teeth (that may have come out on their own) and charge you for each extraction.

I did post an article someplace on YT but couldn't tell you right now where it is at. Basically it said that whether or not growth plates were closed before a stay they still closed. It went on to say that it's the size of the animal that determines when growth places close. The larger the animal the longer it takes.

| London was just turning a year old, Brighton was 14 months, and Chanel was 15 months when they had their first heats. Can be as early as 6 months but all my girls have gone much later. You should notice a lot of swelling in her vulva...you can wipe with a tissue to see if any pink or red blood is present...sometimes you won't see much though. I notice swelling first...a little swelling and light pink in the center of the vulva...they then start to swell up a lot and usually show some blood in the next few days after I first notice signs.

| Thank you every one. I have read many articles on why not to spay early and many articles on why to spay early so I wanted to get some opinions. I have also read that they needed to go through their first heat so not to mess them up hormonally |

| There is no need for them to go through a heat unless they are just simply to small to be spayed before. When most people talk about early spaying and neutering they mean before 6 months old.

| My first 2 girls came into heat at 6 months old. Their adult weight were 10 lbs, the other 13 Lbs, so at 6 months they were over 5 Lbs, my next 2 girls were spayed at 6 months old, before their first heat.

| Have any of you seen a temperament change or a fear of storms etc.. After spaying? I am on a holistic group that swears spaying causes these problems |

| No. My dogs sleep through storms and fireworks and are very sweet.
