No temperament changes here, and in fact Uni still likes to hump her beds.

| ![]() I have never heard that before and with all respect it kind of makes me laugh. Sometimes I think people will try to find anything to make there point seem better. I know lots of dogs spayed before there first heat and they could care less about storms two of which I grew up with one was a larger breed mix the other a Beagle mix.

| ![]() I had 2 un-spayed and 2 spayed, thunder storms would just about traumatize them. I saw no difference in fear of storms with spayed or not spayed.

| ![]() Forgot to add, if a pup is spayed at 6 months of age she is just a little baby, as they get older their personalities change, develop, as babies they are wild little rascals, as adults they are still lil rascals but there are changes due to becoming an adult. I think it's hard to say there was temperament change after spaying if the pup is only 6 months old or spayed before first heat. If you had a girl that went through 3 or 4 heats then was spayed, if there were any temperament change's it would be seen then.

YT 500 Club Member | ![]() My pup just had her first heat cycle that ended last week. She just turned 11 months yesterday. You will know if she's in heat because her female part will be so swollen you can see it from the back. Also my pup bleed very little. Just a few drops here and there |

| ![]() Emma got spayed at 9 months before a heat. Growth plates shouldn't matter so much in small breed dogs. I only was concerned about that with my larger breed dogs i've had in the past.

There are some studies that show no change in temperament, there are some that show change in temperament, but I don't believe there is one overall study that has a general consensus of acceptance by the scientific community. I think the most recent one out was the Viszla study earlier this year. But there is some concern their methodology was flawed. Then of course like any other uni-breed study the drawback is the same; that being how applicable is this study to all other breeds? In terms of spaying - I would not say I have noticed in the pet dogs I have had that there was an increased fear of storms. I think the best bet is to assume the character of the dog you have now, will be the character of the dog you will have after spaying. So if you have a fearfull, nervous or tense dog now, spaying is not going to affect that behaviour.
