Default GREAT website for home cooking recommended by my vet... free recipes!!

I would just like to share with everyone an amazing website that my vet recommended! BalanceIt was not working for me because I feel they are more money-driven rather than care about actual animal welfare. That could be just my opinion but it's the idea I got when they wanted to charge me more money just to get a recipe that won't make my dog sick (she had diarrhea and vomiting from their beef recipe). Not only are their recipes REALLY bland.. but they make you put way too much supplement to the point that the food looks powdery. I feel that's a scheme to make you use more.

Anyway.. I went to my vet and he recommended www.justfoodfordogs.com ! IT'S AMAZING!! They have DIY kits that you buy for 17.95 which makes 30lbs of food! That's $17.95 compared to $60 of BalanceIT. You also get to see all the recipes for free like this one: http://justfoodfordogs.com/wp-conten...okingGuide.pdf

I really like that the recipes aren't bland and their customer service is amazing. You can just call and they will answer all of your questions.. unlike BalanceIt that I couldn't even get a hold of for a few days when Chloe was throwing up.

This is a video of how to prepare the food with their nutrient pack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtxRVt7JeoE

Just thought I'd share this website with those who are interested in home cooking but want an alternative to BalanceIt

Yep, the recipes are made by a vet nutritionist and there is a supplement for the DIY package as well as separate vitamins that you can buy if you want. They also have recipes for pets who are sick. I like that they are more affordable and are easily accessible by phone. My vet recommended it because his colleague owns the website/store. I personally like it and am happy with it, just recommended it for others if they wanted to see something beside BalanceIt.

I am a bit leery sick dogs with health issues food related should be under the care of an actual vet nutritionist in my opinion.

I noticed that nowhere on the website does it state that he is a CERTIFIED veteranian nutritionist. It only says he is a MEMBER of a veterinarian nutrition society which is different from being certified.

Just an observation. Could be just a poorly done web site, but then....

Just bc it didn't work out for you & Chloe doesn't mean they're out to get your money. Lots of people use Balance IT for their pups, how would they feel when they read this? Balance IT also gives you the option of using human supplements & just recently read here on YT that they offer another brand of supplements @ a lesser price.

I know you're just expressing your opinions, but wish you would express them more clearly w/out the judgements. Hope the things I said above are not taken the wrong way or offend in anyway.

Hope Just food for Dogs will be great for Chloe, I really do. I also like these whole fresh food companies & JFFD is based out here in CA. I also read on their website that their diets are prepared by a Vet, so it's nutritionally complete & balanced. I always wanted to try it but they're doing awesome on premade raw for now.

This is what they say about the lead Vet, he sounds very qualified to me. I wouldn't have a problem feeding their food to my sick dog (if I had one, knock on wood), but then I believe in fresh whole foods for both humans & pets:

Our nutrition team is led by our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Oscar Chavez, BVetMed MRCVS MBA. Dr. Chavez is a Professor of Clinical Canine Nutrition and was the Director of the RVT Program at Cal Poly Pomona before joining us full-time. His team is rounded out by a Board Certified Veterinary Toxicologist, RVTs, a Nutriceutical Compounding Technician with a degree in Animal Health Sciences. In addition, JFFD collaborates with the team of researchers at Cal Poly Pomona.

Sorry babiechloe but you're incorrect on both counts.
You have to pay for customizations at Balance It just like any other service by a professional in life. I think you really can't get cheaper than $50 and you won't find someone nicer than the vet who owns that company. As I know it from you, he was quite helpful in your discussions. Your comments about the company are out of line.

The site you recommended here is NOT formulated dog food by a vet nutritionist. You are wrong. I'm surprised your vet couldn't figure that out but as you pointed out, his friend owns the company. Lol.

Also I'll add that I warned you about beef for that dog. Too bad your vet didn't!
Also, home cooking IS more bland. I don't know why that surprised you.
The recipes use diff amounts of BI depending on ingredients to balance the diet. Some meats like beef need things like nitrogen more diluted out than say, chicken.
Chloe had diarrhea because like many Yorkies she can't handle fat!

I've been home cooking for 14 years and know what I'm doing. Tons of people on here use BI without a problem yet you seem to not be able to do so and when things don't go your way, you think it's ok to disparage a company for wanting you to pay $50 for a professional service!! Wow, just wow.

Also I'm wondering why you called balance it when Chloe was throwing up for a few days (from fat!) instead of calling your vet and taking her in. I'm wondering how committed YOU are to animal welfare or whether you are more about saving your $.

I have been using Balance It since 2011 without any problems at all. It, along with the diet formulated by a vet nutritionist, is what I believe has kept my Cookie's illness (lymphangectasia) in check.

I was dismayed by the way you discredited Balance It and for the reasons you gave. First off, you chose beef as the protein and it did not work....so what does that have to do with BI? You could have changed that. My Armani was on tilapia and it did not agree with him so I switched him to chicken but certainly did not blame the Balance It for his issues. I went with what I felt was the most logical offender. As for powder in the food, there is none when I mix my pups' food...I mix it well and it is not seen at. all.

The other reason you gave is that Balance It is making money. How is that any different than any business, including the one your vet's colleague??? It is crystal clear to me that he has started this website/business for income; no matter how catchy his wording is :

We started JustFoodForDogs® with one, simple, primary objective - to increase the quality and length of life for as many dogs as possible.

Clearly he is doing what other companies are doing....mastering the art of marketing. I personally believe, after reviewing his website, that he is in it to make money.

A vet at my vet's practice made a comment one day about how the vet nutritionists are making money now....it is a new trend. People are afraid of dog food because of the insane amount of issues with it. I surely hope the next issue will not be because all at once people think they can make money off of the fear of dog food. IE: Issues may, in the future, crop up with dogs having health issues due to unbalanced diets.

Good luck to you and Chloe. I do hope this new diet works for her. To each his own...I will continue to use Balance It because I much prefer the advice of vet nutritionists. It has worked well for people I know and it is working well for me.

I started using BI for zoey's pancreatitis issues. Chicken and rice. At first she liked it and then after a few days she refused the food. I had to start sprinkling powered Parmesan cheese on top. It is low in fat and I don't use much. This has helped her eat her food. She used to be such a good eater until her tummy issues popped up. Now she is a pip!

Sometimes when dogs with pancreatitis refuse food, it's because the pancreatitis has flared up and they are experiencing some pain. In the past I've recommended sprinkling parmesan cheese on kibble as a temptation, but if a dog is refusing chicken and rice, I don't think I'd try to tempt them with anything. Sometimes, not eating anything is the best treatment for pancreatitis. It's possible, that by eating you could turn a mild flare up into a full blown case of pancreatitis. I know parmesan cheese in low in fat, but for some dogs any fat can be a problem, and it might be wise for them NOT to eat occasionally. Maybe you could check with your vet to be sure.

Zoey begs for food that we are eating which she does not get. Also, if she doesn't eat first thing in the morning she barfs up stinky bile. She did this today. Now I have to put her in the shower and wash her stinky face. I made the mistake of letting her out with Jackson this morning and she ate grass and threw up. Then her tummy doesn't feel good and she won't eat. As I said, she is a pip. I have talked with her vet about this and he told me about BI.
