| Thanks! I'm usually more of a "bully" breed type person but when I seen him, I saw a broken spirit and knew I couldn't leave him behind. He's afraid of my voice, he wags his stub when I approach him but as soon as I speak he acts scared.. :/ I talk in a higher pitched voice and he seems okay. |

| Hi and welcome to YT! Congratulations on your new little one. You will learn lots on this site. I would just take a few days to observe Hippie & let him settle in. I have always found that it takes a little while for the pup to feel comfortable enough to start showing their true personality.

| Congrats on your new rescue, you could not have made a better choice. I volunteer at a rescue and can offer a few pieces of advice to help you and Hippie along the journey. 1. You will need to earn Hippies trust, get down on the floor with him and sit, hand feed him some of his kibble and let him understand you are the good guy. 2. Get a good harness for Hippie and take him out for walks. Yorkies (or an small breed) should only be walked with a harness. Do not be surprised if Hippie does not know how to walk on a leash, that may take some training. 3. If Hippie was in a shelter type enviroment he may be really tired the first couple of days, that is normal. Also he may know eat well, it is important that you try to get him to eat and if it goes on longer than a couple of days call you Vet. 4. Very important - Get Hippie into your Vet for a welcome visit. Did the rescue give you his previous Vet records? Again, Congrats and let me know if I can help anymore.

| Another point, ask questions! Everyone on Yorkie talk loves the breed and will more than happy to offer advice. You will NOT find a better group of people who in my opinion are experts on the breed. Do not be shy, no one will yell or be rude but we all will offer advice.

| My first yorkie was a rescue too. I went through this forum with a fine tooth comb absorbing any info I could. My Brandi (RIP) was sort of like yours in the beginning but over time I manage to turn her in to a full blown diva. It took some time and patience but it was so worth it. She was my velcro baby and some behaviors I could not change. She remained very skittish of other human beings so after awhile I just learn to accept that is how she is and will always be. I took the advice from this forum and because of that I know Brandi's life with me was absolutely wonderful and full of love. She passed away knowing that someone loved her. |

| Welcome to YT, thank you for rescuing lil Hippie, does he come withy eyes & nose lol, he's a furry lil kido. So what you have done is come from bully breed to big time attitude breed, one that will capture your heart. I also have a resuce, but not new to the breed, new to rescues that come with baggage. Baggage that you will never know of. Patience, kindness, understanding, accepting what cannot / may not be able to change. Speak to him in gentle tones. He needs time to gain trust in you, trust that you will not cause harm to him. Sofiekatesmom gave good advise, vet visit asap is a must. Do not get discouraged if it takes him time to show no more fear of you. These little rescue babies have no voice, cannot tell you what they went through. I send you the following on behalf of Hippie. Now that I'm all home, bathed, settled and fed, All nicely tucked in my warm new bed, I'd like to open my baggage lest I forget, There is so much to carry, so much to regret. Hmmmmm, Yes, there it is right on the top, Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss, And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame, As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave, I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain. I loved them, the others, the ones who left me, But I wasn't good enough; for they didn't want me. Will you add to my baggage? Will you help me unpack? Or will you just look at my things and take me right back? Do you have the time to help me unpack? To put away my baggage, To never repack? I pray that you do; I'm so tired, you see. But I do come with baggage; will you still want me? You have joined a forum of devoted yorkie lovers, experienced, knowledgeable, that are more then eager to answer, advise, suggest offer their opinions, (no vets on this forum). Ask and you shall receive. Good luck with your new lil boy.

| Thanks everyone! Hippie is now Tito his first night went really good. What a relief! he got a bath today and his coat feels a lot better, he doesnt mind being combed eu either. I didn't get him from a rescue, I got him off of some guy and the story I got was that his previous owner died and her daughter's boyfriends buddy took him and wasn't caring for him. We went for a long walk today (myself and family, Tito and Maggie, my pit/boxer) he seemed to really enjoy it. Haircut ideas? I've seen a few styles I like. Also I'm not sure if he's ourebred or not as he looks bigger then the usual yorkie and also a longer snout. |
