| Hi, We're from the UK too! Kent. My fiancé and I got Penny when she was 8 weeks and she's now 5 and a half months. We were also very worried about working full time but figured having a dog shouldn't be something we missed out on because of work (I mean, having a puppy shouldn't be something for people who can afford to work or work part time) We took a week off work for her to settle. I work at a shop in town not far In the car from home, and my fiancé works at a pub. He does do shift work so days that he started at 11 it later we would leave her in a crate until I got home just after 5.30. On days he had an early start so it would be an 8 hour days would pop home In my lunch break for half an hour or so, let her out for a wee, feed, water change and play. We did training classes for 8 weeks when she was old enough and spent all our time when we weren't artwork practising toilet training, learning tricks for obedience etc. I'm not going to lie, leaving her at first was heartbreaking, and I did worry. The one thing that made it more bearable was our camera. Buy BELKIN F7D7601uk Wireless Home Security Camera | Free Delivery | Currys It's a netcam, we set it up facing her crate and you can access it over the Internet from any smartphone or ipad. It's been such a help in putting my mind at ease while we're away. Already I can check on her from work, and if anything was wrong I could be home in less than 10 minutes. Anyway we're now at the stage where Penny is almost fully toilet trained too outside, pads aren't used any more much. She's great at her tricks. She walks off the lead at the park good recall. We received a lot of questions and criticism for considering getting a puppy with full time jobs, but as long as you dedicate most or allow your time outside of work to the little one, which you definitely sound like you would, it'll be fine. Im positive that us being away from Penny has in no way adversely affected her. In fact, I'm glad we started getting her used to being away from a young age, she knows the time, hops in her crate and sleeps for most of the day. I don't have to come home at lunch any more and I come home to no wees or poos, and a very happy puppy. Don't let anyone tell you it isn't possible. Good luck Danni, Ben & Penny Xx |

| Hi penny! Thanks from the reply. I'm in Sidcup do its like Kent/London. I grew up in ramsgate and my parents are still there. Your post has really out my mind at ease. Whilst I'm working in central London so I can't pop back, I'm positive my neighbours would help. I will definitely look at getting a camera although it may result in me not doing any work and just watching all day. I'm not going to crate him all day but use a puppy pen so he can feel more relaxed then eventually just gate off my kitchen as its massive. I'm also going to litter train as I would feel terrible if he had to hold it in all day and then something happens and he got nowhere to go. It doesn't happen often but it's stressful enough commuting without that worry. I just worry so much as everyone is so bloody negative! Xxxx |

| I had a webcam when I first got my little one and actually I thought it was kind of eerie. I remember this one time I didn't see her in the webcam for hours. I panicked and rushed home. When I got home she looked at me like I was crazy. The camera was at an odd angle and she was just sleeping out of the view. Boy I felt so silly and relieved at the same time. Once i knew she was okay during the day without me I didn't turn it on as much. Thankfully she just sort of slept most of the time and the other times was spent looking out the window barking at God knows what. |

| Kirsty, I guess you just got quite a scare! While what has happened to Sir Teddyskins is very unusual and I'm very sorry for what she is going through. Yes, many dogs do have separation anxiety but most do not have it nearly as bad as her dog. I've had 3 dogs and had to work with 2 of them and while they didn't like being left, they didn't potty in my house, chew on things once they were trained. My advice to you is to read all you can about having a puppy, socializing it, & obedience training. Over here in the states, there are places we can take our puppies and get them trained at an early age (after they've had their shots) for about $25. It's very good for dogs to be around children under close supervision, and other small dogs like them. Good Luck to you when you do get a pup and welcome to the forum! |

A pen and indoor training is a great idea if you can't get back home. The camera does getting boring as even now Penny knows just to sleep all day when we're gone. Every time I check the camera she's still asleep just in a different position! If your neighbours can't always help (I don't know if you have anything like this near you) but the place I take Penny for training also offers dog sitting services, and even a service to pop in on your dog in the daytime. I think it's something like £7 for them to go in for half an hour, check on them, let them out, water change and play. Or £10 for an hour or something. Anyway it's a really good idea and they're lovely. Me and Ben are getting married next year and Penny will be staying with them for a couple of days (shame she won't be at the wedding) Good Luck though! I can't wait to see the little one when you get him! Maybe we can arrange a play date for them eventually since you're not far! X | |
