Senior Yorkie Talker | Bedtime Poetry So, I've found this one by Edward Lear works very well to get Shelby to settle down - she's usually building her nest by the first "Far and few" and totally out by the "Chankly Bore". The Jumblies by Edward Lear : The Poetry Foundation My dad used to read this to me at bed time (my mom did "The Owl and the Pussycat") - anyhow there's something about the rhythm that seems to work for Shelby. Anyone else have a favorite poem to settle the pup? Reading it out loud also relaxes me - so it's a win win. (or am I a totally over the top Yorkie dad?) |

Edward Lear was my 'go to' poet...or at least the poems that my parents used to read to me.... 'Nonsense poems' as they're called over here.... I absolutely adore you for reading Olde English Victorian Poets to your bub!!! x

Senior Yorkie Talker | Nonsense for dogs Quote:
"Far and few, far and few" has turned out to be an instant soporific for Shelby - who knew? But then this rather precious blogger posts "Far and few, far and few / are the land where the Jumblies live”: copying down that line as an adult carries with it a certain shame at ever having been entranced by it, to say nothing the greater shame that this entrancement has not ended, although the words no longer possess the incantatory power they did when I first encountered the poem as a child. " Paris Review ? Edward Lear?s ?The Dong with a Luminous Nose?, Sam Munson I have zero shame about copying it down if it gets an overtired Yorkie to make her nest and go to sleep. Have I ever mentioned how much I love watching Shelby making a nest? I probably have - but I can't get over how relaxing it is to both her and us… Sweet dreams to all Yorkies and their parents - we all have the right to bedtime poetry…

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Crystals Favorite (probably as its one of mine and spoken in a sad voice) High Flight Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air.... Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark nor even eagle flew— And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God... It was written by John Gillespie Magee Jr. (9 June 1922 – 11 December 1941) an American aviator and poet who died as a result of a mid-air collision over Lincolnshire, England during World War II, whilst in a dog fight between his Spitfire and a German ME109. He was serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force, which he joined before the United States officially entered the war. What a tragic waste of such genius! She's also partial to AE Houseman! |

Also, if I remember correctly - at least some stations in the US used to (still do? - I'm not up that late anymore) use "High Flight" as a station sign off before the national anthem - at least that's where I first heard that poem. Shelby also gets Heinrich Heine once in a while (she finds German lyric poetry soothing, too)

Senior Yorkie Talker | Poetry For what it's worth - she's two years old now - and even when she's all riled up all I have to do is start with "They went to sea in a sieve they did, in a sieve they went to sea...." and she immediately starts building a nest and plumps down to sleep in a minute - here's for reading poetry to your pups as a bedtime ritual, big success here! |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | So here we are two years on and my family extended by one little 16 month, 4lb parti coated member. This one spends all her nights snuggled up to me. Her favorite nightcap is 'Congo Lullaby'. Being a base baratone I attempt, miserably to render it like the great Paul Robeson. She's asleep on her back, front legs stretched up within a few minutes. If I'm tired and forget, she gently chews my fingers until she gets her night time fix. At 30 months Crystal pretends it's all a bit silly, but always snuggles into my back - and then starts snoring! If there's a bad storm, or they become aggravated by exterior disturbance I've found singing in a naturally deep voice very softly sooths their little troubles away. My mother was a renowned amateur 'Mezzo Soprano' and I recall her performing the same gift for me as a child. I loved her beautiful voice and can here her playing the piano and singing 'Blow the winds southerly' even to this day. Here's the master's version of 'Holly's favourite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAhz794bZdk |

| My DH tells Dinky a bedtime story every night. It is the same one and involves all the people and dogs that Dinky knows settling down for bed time. The truth is it makes me feel all cozy and sleepy too! I'm inspired by this thread to try something more literary! Last edited by dinkster; 07-27-2015 at 03:56 AM. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Awww.... literary is fine in its way - but Dinky having her (or his??) *own* story beats anything published... stick with that! (particularly if it helps you sleep, too! - that's a bonus!) |
