| Close call with lilah today I know I have read others stories but we have not had such a scare as we had today.... We took a trip to the nearby lake we like to go to in the gorge, fun for the kids To play in, grass, shade, trees and of course dog friendly. We chose a secluded corner for our family to settle in and overall we had a very nice day. However, midway through our trip we were about an inch away from it going all bad. Lilah and I were walking (on a leash of course) on the main path through the park to grab a few things out of the car, it was a very crowded but we were in a wide open space and had already stopped to talk to a nice older lady who wanted to say hi to lilah. A little further along a young blonde woman was standing with a beautiful pure white husky/wolf looking dog who appeared to be safely on a leash and sitting nicely, she smiled, I smiled and then her dog lunged at mine totally unexpectedly and she lost her grip on the leash. I know the right response is to have an umbrella or even a stick but I had my shorts and tank top bare arms and my little girl on a leash so my automatic response was to haul her up- I know she looked like a dangling squirrel and all in one moment she was as high as she could be and he was leaping and snapping and I swallowed her into my arms and in my rowdy 'raised by my father-mother of five children-load hundreds of pounds of feed and hay for a living and know how to wrestle a ram' voice I hollered/growled some sort of very loud noise and he sat right down. Thank god. By this (short, very short) time the owner had made it to her dog (six feet away?) and was apologizing profusely, she was very shaken up and explaining that he normally does so well with little dogs and was visibly about to cry. We continued on to our car and got our things but on our way back we went the long way around over the lumpy hill and avoided walking anywhere near their group- what a terrifying experience.

| Oh my, that is horrifying! I'm glad to hear your baby is okay and avoided being attacked. It is always a fear I have when I'm out and about with my Sophie and we come across big dogs. Most owners give their assurance their dog is friendly, but you just never know! Sophie did get lunged at once a few years back at an outdoor mall by a leashed medium sized dog. The owner, too, lost grip of her dog's leash and she was inches from biting Sophie. I was extremely grateful for Sophie's Buddy Belt b/c my mom (who was walking her at the time) was able to swoop her up quickly with her leash and she didn't get injured. Yay for Buddy Belts!

| Wow how scary! I had a similar experience once with a loose dog charging my Phoebe. It sure made me glad I always use a harness!

YT 1000 Club Member | Some people have no idea what those loops on the "owner" end of the Leashes are for. If she had put her hand through the loop, that incident would have never got that far. Our Dogs do unexpected things at times, that's why we have Leash Laws.

| I know exactly how you felt. Where I live, I was living here one week, one Sat. I decided to take a break from unpacking and took (then) my 2 dogs for a walk to out the community. I hadn't gone that far, I heard a sound behind me, when I turned there was a huge Belgium Shepard running at us with about 10 feet of it's retractable leach bouncing behind him. I scooped up my smallest one first (she was the feistiest one) before I could scoop up the bigger one the Sheppard was there, I hauled her up by her harness like a dangling fish all the time turning my body away from this dog which by now his retractable leash had wrapped it's self around my right ankle, had that Shepard taken one more step he would have I would have been flipped off my feet onto my back, my other dog was still dangling, the one is my arms was getting aggressive, just as I was able to gather the dangling one the in my arms owner was there, the retractable leash was now cutting into my ankle (it was summer,I had on shorts) I hollered at him to not make that dog move, I said look at the leash. After he unwrapped it from my ankle, all he said was, his dog was very friendly, he said he was talking to a neighbor, didn't have a tight hold on the retractable, he said his dog must have heard the jingle of my dogs tags, he lived around the corner from where my house was, reason I never saw any dog on the road, my biggest pup who was the youngest was traumatized, still screaming in fear, he NEVER apologized. I NEVER walked my dogs in my community after that. I have not seen that dog in 10 years, maybe it died, maybe the ppl moved. My first walk was this past March, 13 years after this incident with my adopted boy, and I took a can of wasp spray with me "just in case", and kept looking over my shoulder to make sure no dog was coming up behind me. I am truly petrified to walk in my community, but Cody is leash trained and I want him to not forget how to walk on one, second, should he ever get out of the house he should know this area to be able to find his way home. So I know the horror of your day.BTW, this was not the first time this happened to my bigger, but younger one, this happened to her at a campground 2 summers earlier, severally traumatized by a huge Husky / wolf that escaped from it's owner. Again, no apology from the owner, again said his dog was friendly, yet my dog is still screaming in fear. That had left my dog so fearful of walking, poor thing was always looking over her shoulder. I have a small dog, I wrap the leash twice around my had in case he lunges, I did this with all my dogs, and they were small ones, these ppl with huge dogs lightly hold their leash's, what's up with that? So glad your encounter with this dog, he knew commands and listened to a stranger. Horrifying for you and your lil baby.

| I have said it before and I'll say it again....dogs react differently outside the home than they do inside. My son has a perfectly submissive Lab that is well trained but when he was outside in the yard with Gracie all he wanted to do was stomp her into the ground! Inside he was a perfect gentleman. Of course I got her away from him right away. He didn't hurt her but it taught me a lesson. So glad you were able to shut down that dog's instincts with a good loud commanding sound. When one of my other dogs was attacked by a neighborhood dog I took my purse and kept smacking the other dog with it until the owner grabbed him. The owner was mad because I hit his monster dog! I don't think I had ever hit a dog before in my life but I would have beaten that dog until it let my baby go. These things happen so fast that you just react with whatever you've got. I was hollering as much as I could but that dog was snarling so loud i don't think it heard me. I walk with my eyes going in all directions now as I'm sure you will, too. |

| I am so sorry that happened to you. I'm relieved to hear neither of you were physically harmed, but I imagine the fear will take a long time to go away. When I had three Yorkies who are now at the Rainbow Bridge, I dropped a leash a few times accidentally. I have a few Buddy Belts with matching leashes, but I also got a couple of reflective leashes from Hurrta which you slip your hand into neoprene. They are wider than the Buddy Belt leashes that I prefer, but I feel safer with this leash, particularly at night. I know you didn't drop the leash, but in still thought I'd share this anyway. I hope you don't mind. Hurtta Free Hand Leash Use Havanese10 for a 10% discount.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I am so glad you and Lilah are okay. It sounds like the owner was taken aback too, and I am glad she apologized. It just goes to show things can happen in an instant of in-attention. Many dogs are friendly .. until they are not... And I don't mean this in a judgemental way, it is just the nature of the canine. Prey drive can get triggered where/when it was never triggered before. My pet peeve which is becoming a passionate peeve are the retractable leads. THey should in my opinion never be used for walking a dog of ANY size. If you want to allow your dog some space to run, get to a park, then put on the retractable lead, throw your toy etc. I tell you if I see a dog and most especially a dog which is larger sized on a retractable lead I cross the street if I can, I also bring my dogs into heel on a very short but loose lead. We have pretty strick lease laws here, and thankfully the majority of folks abide by them, put if you have your bruiser on a retractable lead, you simply have no control over that dog. And if you have a toy dog out to the end of the long lead you simply can't re-act fast enough to reel that dog in. Plus the handles of those leads or ergonomically awkward. Also folks should know just a word to the wise, is that the two weakest spots on the collar and lead/leash attachment is the loup on the collar the snap on the lead that attaches the lead to the collar/halter. ON a large dog, this can wear over time, and a very hard pull can have the two detach from each other. Then you have a free dog...........
