| Terribly Matting Fur + Collar/Harness? Hello, hoping to get a bit of advice on what to do with a tiny girl whose fur is so fine that it mats with just about any harness or collar being on her. Any ideas from experienced yorkie people here? I'd love to keep a bell on her at all times because she's so tiny and always underfoot, but can't figure out a way I can do this and not have the fur around her neck get hopelessly tangled. Any thoughts/ideas? Thanks in advance! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | My Marcel has super fine hair too - and he mats terribly whenever he wears his harness...and I've found nothing that helps at all. For his collar, I have him wear a rather silky collar, and that seems to help a bit.

Paris: Always in my ♥ Donating YT Member | Collars are never a good idea. Take it from me. Collapsing trachea is no fun. How about a little tee shirt under the harness? Maybe worth a try? |

| My Morkie used to be like that but overtime her fur started to get silkier. I have her fur very short on her back to keep her hair from tangling, but I keep her face legs and tail very long. When she did have a cotton coat it helped with that problem. I still keep her in that cut in the summer because I think it's cute. I always recommend getting a harness. Make sure it fits your dog correctly because if it doesn't it can have the same effect a collar can do on your baby |

| I have a collar on Gizmo, it's a breakaway made for cats. The dog collars just seemed so big and clunky for his little body. I bought it with a bell when I first got him because he was always underfoot. Now it just has his name tag and I never attach his leash to it. |

| I think having a collar on with tags is so extremely important because even if you think you dog can't get out things happen and they end up finding away out and without a collar you may or may not get your dog back. Have you tried keeping her hair very short especially around the neck?

| So many dogs are lost every year and many of them with out collars and if they had a collar and a tag they could quickly been reunited with there family. Just wearing a collar does not cause collapsing trachea using the collar to hook the leash to it were the problems start. My dog and my moms dog both have ct and both wear collars with tags we just never hook the leash to them and they are loose enough where if they got stuck on something they would slide off.

| My two wear a collar with tags with information on how to get in touch with me should they escape and get lost. The leash is hooked to their harness not their collar. There are so many lost dogs in my area and many of them don't have ID tags nor are they microchipped. Last week one finder of a Yorkie gave it to a relative. Mine are microchipped as well but that means a finder will have to wait until the next day to have them scanned if they get out at night. I'm all for a collar with an ID tag, there is no reason for the collar to be put on tight.

| You could try a rolled leather collar. I always used them on my shih tzu and she never got matted around her neck. |

Having a collar is very important so you can put their identification tags on it. You should am get a chip also. When it comes to walking I think it's better to use a harness. It's always good to be safe than sorry | |

| Thank you so much for all of your ideas everyone; feeling lucky to be here -- you all are so friendly and full of advice! I will definitely look into getting a breakaway, silky collar for her... she does need a bell since I never seem to know where she is with her tiny size. For her harness, I may try a t-shirt underneath it... interesting idea, will experiment with that for sure. Her hair is pure cotton, just looking at it seems to mat it! Thanks again everyone! |

I have a soft coated pup too!! (Aka cotton coat) I've just given up on the hopes of a long coat. Kaji was and still is absolutely miserable to be combed out. I keep him short now.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I use a breakaway collar too. There as been a few dogs that have died from hanging because the collar got stuck. If the pup mats I would not use a t shirt. That would also make mats. I brush Galen every time I take off his harness to make sure he doesn't mat.
