| New Mommy, lots of questions. Help! Hello, I'm new to this forum and am also a new mommy to a 13 week old pup named Chico. He's been home with us for 3 days and we are using the pet play yard along with his crate for sleeping. During the day we have let him explore the house (living room, dining room and Kitchen) supervised. When we go to bed he goes into his play yard and into his crate when he sleeps, however I am not locking the crate which allows him to come out and use the potty, eat and drink throughout the night. This morning I noticed he peed A LOT. The pee pads soaked through onto the floor and even leaked out of the play yard into the dining room. We have hardwood floors so the cleanup wasn't too bad. Am I doing the right thing by allowing him access to the play yard? Should I lock his crate when he sleeps? He does wake up to eat and drink and use the restroom so I'm not sure if locking him in his crate is the right thing to do. Any feedback would be so greatly appreciated!!! |

| I have always crate trained, yes locking the crate at night or if I go off...only time I use play yard is outside, etc.... The pups learn not to potty in bed, when I take them out we go straight outside, my Annie goes in her crate, door open, that's her bed and security... I do lock the crate when I go off ... Want her safe as possible... My new lil girl will be here in a few weeks, I so cannot wait.... |

| I wouldnt lock the crate if he is using his pad and having a lil snack at night. you may find if chico doenst have that snack through the night he will have an upset belly in the morning. Sounds like you are getting him into a good system. Welcome to you and Chico...we need pictures.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | At such a young age, I'm not sure I'd be locking that crate yet. But then, I'm not one for crate training...so I may not be the correct person to answer this one.

| Thank you all for your suggestions and comments! I decided not to lock his crate at night, he's a really good puppy and I don't see the benefit in locking the crate. He comes out to potty, eat and drink. I did however limit his water and that seemed to take care of the soaked potty pads, a problem I had yesterday morning. Now I have to figure out this whole potty training. When he's in his play yard he knows to potty on his pads, however when I let him roam the house he always find a spot on the carpet to pee on, no a lot of pee just a drop. Any idea why he's doing that and how I can teach him not to? |

| Crate training is addressing the potty issues. They learn not to potty in their beds...one lady suggested when not at home, use a small crate during the day, she comes home she picks up the crate and carries her baby outside, opens the door and her baby goes potty and plays...then she has access in a play yard....she says this has worked..I am not a fan of pee pads...my girl has her own bedroom per say with her crate done up with her bed blankets and toys...its not for discipline...also I would never leave a puppy without her in the crate and locked...my fear would be she get into something that would harm her...while i am home all day usually..the crate door stays open..she sometimes prefer to have some "her time"....she goes in her bed and takes a nap if i am cleaning...hope this makes sense...I am a fan of crates...for potty training, then keeping her safe...however, I am not a fan of people using that to just keep them locked up... |

| Chico's play yard is in doors. I don't take him out yet as he doesn't have all his vaccines. He has an appt for another round in 2 weeks. I live in a condo and there are a lot of cats and dogs and I worry he'll catch something if I take him outside to potty. My set up is play yard in my dining room with his crate/bed/blanket on one corner, in another corner I have potty pads, in another corner food and water and his toys in the middle. All of this is inside his pet yard where he stays when we sleep and while we are at work. At night he comes in and out of his crate to potty, eat and drink and then he takes himself back to his crate to sleep. When I get home from work I let him out of play yard to roam the house until we go to bed. The problem I'm having is when I let him out of the play yard he eventually tinkles on the carpet. I'm still trying to figure it all out, being a new mom is hard but he's worth every minute! |
